As expected there's been more casting news related to the Green Lantern film since filming is underway down in New Orleans. This week's news features the casting of a couple of smaller roles and one major surprise for the upcoming film.
First off, a young actor named Gattlin Griffith has been added to the cast. According to the Comic Book Movie(CBM) website, Gattlin has been cast as a young boy named "Robert" in the film. The leaked first draft of the script has no one named Robert in the movie, however he could be playing the role previously called "Nathan" in the original script, Nathan being Hal Jordan's nephew and son of Jim Jordan.
Another obvious role for Gattlin would be the young Hal Jordan to complement Jenna Craig's Carol Ferris. However that wouldn't explain the reference to him being called Robert in the film, and since there's no real big secret to there being a young Hal in light of Carol being announced, one would think that Nathan's name must have since been changed.
Or, there could be another role created in subsequent rewrites of the script and he's a new character we haven't heard about. But I'd place my money on him being Hal's nephew.
Brazilian model Marcela Duarte has also been given an unspecified role in the film. Marcela doesn't have any acting roles listed for her on the Internet Movie Database so she has either never been credited for any roles she's had or she's never acted before.
My hunch for Ms. Durate is that she is playing Jenna, "a yoga toned hottie". In the first draft of the script we encounter the adult Hal Jordan for the first time post coitus with Jenna before discovering at the most inopportune moment that she has a rather muscular boyfriend who doesn't appreciate the flight maneuvers of young Mr. Jordan used to land on his girlfriend.
Marcela's involvement was discovered via her twitter posts and her acknowledgement that her scenes are indeed being filmed with Ryan Reynolds lands credence to her being cast as Jenna. CBM also has a couple pictures of Ms. Duarte on the set to further confirm her being cast in Green Lantern.
IESB interviewed stuntman Jeff Wolfe who indicated that he has a role in Green Lantern that included acting and doing his own stunts. My first thought is that he is Jenna's boyfriend who fights with Hal during a dinner date with Carol in retribution for the moves he put on his girlfriend. It's this sequence that was likely filmed at the Old Point Bar when filming began on March 15th, including a night where some fight sequences were filmed in which Hal inadvertently uses his ring to fend off some attackers.
CBM also has some other behind the scenes photos from New Orleans, most notable of which are pictures of the director's chairs of some of the production staff. Notable is the Green Lantern logo on the back of the chair, which nearly matches the logo on the Guardians robes in the previously leaked concept art for the movie. People who've been able to meet Ryan Reynolds in New Orleans have commented that they've seen the ring on his hand and that it resembles the ring included in the DC Direct prop lantern battery, being dark green, round, and having the classic logo on it.
The most surprising news that's come out about the movie this week has been the casting of Angela Bassett in the film. What makes her casting a surprise that she will be portraying Amanda Waller in the movie, a role not previously associated with this film.
This leads to some speculation that perhaps the role of "Pipe" has been changed to Amanda Waller and that this will indeed mark the beginning of a creation of unified movie universe for DC's characters. Without giving away the surprise of the identity of "Pipe" I will only say that this character served a couple of purposes, one being to frame the movie in what I consider a silly unneeded sequence and the other to be a government presence investigating the crash of Abin Sur. The thought that "Pipe" has evolved into Waller is an interesting one since she could be utilized in more antagonistic ways than Pipe could have. So long as she isn't just used as a cameo in the end credits to tease at a Justice League film it's fine with me. As much the Pipe character is a neat Easter Egg, the framing sequences really are corny and Waller has so much more dramatic potential both now and down the line.
Blake Lively recently did an interview for Vogue magazine where she mentions that her hair color is up for discussion in her portrayal of Carol Ferris. As we've seen, it looks like she agreed to have her hair dyed for the movie in the previously released behind the scenes photo take of her and Reynolds. Sadly, Lively says she isn't a fan of Star Sapphire's new costume, so if we see that character arc progressed in succeeding sequels we'll likely see a different costume for Carol Ferris' alter ego.
There's also news that Warner's animation is looking to put together another Green Lantern animated feature to coincide with the movies' June 17, 2011 release date. This would sync up nicely with the rumored Bruce Timm Green Lantern animated series as well.
Lastly, Greg Berlanti was interviewed by MTV's Splashpage about the upcoming film and his role in writing the script. He comments about why Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the role while not revealing anything at all.
