Blake Lively Discusses Green Lantern

While promoting her latest movie, "The Town", Blake Lively discussed how her performance in this film prompted Warner Brothers to consider her for the role of Carol Ferris.  In this conversation with VIP Access International correspondent Stevie Wong, Lively also gives her take on why the Green Lantern film is not just another summer blockbuster superhero movie.

Personnally, I've been a bit underwhelmed with how Blake has come off in interviews and have had some concerns about her casting.  But this short interview has me reconsidering that notion.  The interview also underscores the thought that Warner Brothers is taking great care to make sure that the projects they develop with the DC Universe characters are more than attempts to mine the properties for a quick buck.

Green Lantern Corps 53 Review

Tyler Kirkham begins his tenure on the Green Lantern Corps as artist with issue 53, released this week. We head for the showdown between Kyle Rayner and Sinestro that was mentioned at the New York Comic Con and we see the emergence of the Weaponer of Qward as a major new threat in the Green Lantern universe.

The Story –
Flashback some years ago to Qward in the antimatter universe at some point in time after Sinestro has been banished there by the Guardians for his actions in his sector which should be playing out in the upcoming Green Lantern: Secret Origin 2 that should be coming out in the next year. For the first time readers get to bear witness to the forging of Sinestro’s ring, which has seemingly been retconned a bit, no longer having the yellow gem that fans are accustomed to.

Blackest Night Motion Comic in the Works!

Pixofactor, one of the leaders in making motion comics, has an interesting video out there showing some work being done on a Blackest Night motion comic.  This ties in with some of the comments made during the licensing  expo back in June when DC Entertainment listed all the ways that Green Lantern was going to be seen in the marketplace as we get closer to the release of the movie.

Check it out:

Official WB Green Lantern Concept Art and Set Report

Steve Weintraub from Collider has a great video report from the set of Green Lantern in New Orleans that wass filmed in August when he was invited by Warner Brothers to visit them during filming.  Most of that report will air later, presumably after the official teaser trailer hits next month preceding Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, but they have a preview video up on their site that talks a bit about the visit that's very interesting and stokes the fires of enthusiasm for this film.  The more I see coming from Warner Brothers the more this movie looks like an epic comic book film.

Along with the video, Collider provided a couple of high quality pieces of official concept art:

This first piece is the main city on the planet Oa and you can obviously see the giant green shaft of light that likely comes from the central power battery.  Click on the image to get the full size version.

Here are the crypts of the fallen members of the Green Lantern Corps - note the figures on the lower left, one of whom is most likely cryptkeeper Morro.  The site of the Green Lanterns visible inside each marker is pretty cool.

Green Lantern Creature Designer Brings the Corps to Life

Neville Page has had a lot of marquee films added to his resume in recent years, having worked as a creature and character designer for such Hollywood blockbusters as Avatar, Watchmen and the relaunch of the Star Trek franchise.  But perhaps no project has tested the limits of his creativity as the upcoming Green Lantern film with Page and his team designing so many varied creatures representing the alien Green Lanterns that will populate the upcoming film.  The previously leaked images of some of the character concept art images and the amount of work shown for developing a good look for mainstays like Kilowog and Tomar-Re is a clear indication that Page and his team are taking the rich history of the Green Lantern Corps seriously and trying to remain true to what fans are hoping to see.

Concept designs for Kilowog
In an exclusive interview with IGN Page talks about the challenge in respecting the love that fans have for the characters while still making sure that they look right on celluloid.  This presents a challenge for the filmmakers and Page recognized how creative comic book creators have been over the fifty one years that the Green Lantern Corps has been in existence and it is clear from his comments that he has a deep appreciation and respect for the creativity he's seen with the all the comic book character designs.

In a quote from the interview he says, "one of things I've learned from working on Green Lantern was how much I need to push myself creatively because I saw these creatures -- I'd never conceive that because I haven't done enough drugs or whatever. I don't know how those guys did it."  Go to IGN and check out the full interview.

Green Lantern 58 Review

Atrocitus and Sinestro trade barbs, Adara the Entity of Hope finds a host, Carol pulls a Hal on Hal, and Larfleeze shows his serious side in this month's issue of the main Green Lantern title.

The Story -
This issue picks up with Atrocitus and Sinestro on the trail of The Butcher, a.k.a. the red entity, in Deer Lodge, Montana.  The giant red bull has raised hell at the state penitentiary where he's ripped through a cell block leaving dead bodies in his wake, apparently looking for a host.  A cop pulls a gun on them and Sinestro responds in classic style, nonchalantly creating a slew of weapons targeted at all the law enforcement officers while clasping his hands behind his back and casually telling him to stop pointing his gun or he will have to point back.

A Second Green Lantern Rollercoaster to Debut in 2011

A month ago a video came out showing a new Green Lantern rollercoaster being built for the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey.  A new video from Six Flags has emerged showing that the Magic Mountain in Los Angeles, California will be getting a new Superman coaster and a Green Lantern coaster that is completely different than the one being constructed for Great Adventure. Both Green Lantern thrill rides are set to debut in 2011 to coincide with the movie's release.

The Magic Mountain coaster features a spinning car and a smaller footprint than the stand up traditional sized coaster for Great Adventure.  You can see the GL coaster about a minute in on the video.

Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors 3 Review

More of Zardor's plan is revealed and Guy Gardner makes a fateful decision in the third issue of Pete Tomasi's run on Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors.  The series continues to lay the foundation for what we now know is an upcoming battle of the Green Lanterns and a major throw-down between Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan.
The Story -
On Odym the standoff between Red Lantern Bleez and Green Lanterns Kilowog and Arisia reaches a fever pitch, with Guy Gardner's unwillingness to be held hostage leading to a battle.  Bleez is trying to tell Guy something important but her rage prevents her from really being able to communicate.

Green Lantern Movie Wins 2010 Scream Award

Ryan Reynolds
Updated!  The Spike TV 2010 Scream Awards Ceremony was filmed last night in front of a live audience and among the winners was the upcoming Green Lantern movie, winning the "Most Anticipated Movie" award.  This is some good news for Warner Brothers since this isn't an award where you vote based on a predetermined selection, but one given based on write in nominations where anything is fair game.  Oh, and the design of the power battery has been revealed!

Given that next summer is looking to be a crowded slate of blockbusters including Thor, Captain America, Transformers 3, Super 8 and the last Harry Potter film it is good to know that the Green Lantern film has a lot of buzz even before the first trailer has been released.

Green Lantern Sequel and Flash Scripts Expected by the End of the Year

Deadline reports that the latest script for the Flash and the treatment for Green Lantern 2 are expected to be turned in to Warner Brothers by Christmas.  Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green are working on both films; the same trio who wrote the initial script for the upcoming Green Lantern movie.

Regarding the production status of the Green Lantern film, insiders have said that the film is "jaw-dropping" and that Martin Campbell is hard at work on the editing of the film.

Green Lantern Animated Series Concept Art

Over at Geeks of Doom they've posted pictures of some of the concept art and character models for the upcoming Green Lantern animated series, the first all CG project for a DC Comics character.  The report on their site expanded on some of the information about the show, indicating that 26 episodes have been ordered and that Bruce Timm and company have the first half of the season mapped out.

Their report also mentioned that Andrea Romano is not involved in the voice casting for the show and that the test footage that was shown was basically footage used to help judge what animation studio would get the work for the show.

Click on the "Read More" button to see the artwork.  Not all the artwork from the Geeks of Doom site is included, I omitted some of the pics that I thought were too blurry to bother re-posting, but you can always go to their site if you want to see them.

Green Lantern Test Footage Hits the Internet

Unlike the movie teaser footage for the live action film previewed at San Diego Comic Con, this weekend someone recorded the demo footage shown at this weekend's New York Comic Con.  The picture's so-so and pretty dark, and the character designs are very early versions, but it does give us an idea of what we can expect to see.   With that in mind it is pretty cool for what it is and I can't wait to see the series that Bruce Timm will be bringing to the Cartoon Network.

More Green Lantern News From New York

Late this afternoon Geoff Johns, Pete Tomasi, Tony Bedard and the whole Green Lantern franchise creative team held the New York Comic Con version of the "Emerald Empire" panel, where more tidbits and hints of what we can look forward to in the coming months were revealed.  New DC exclusive artist Tyler Kirkham was on the panel as the new artist for the Green Lantern Corps title, replacing Ardian Syaf, who of late hasn't had the quality that he had when his run began.  Kirkham is well known for his work at Top Cow and on Marvel's Ultimate Fantastic Four book.

In the Corps title we'll be seeing a lot more of the Weaponer of Qward, who initially thought he was doing something good in creating Sinestro's ring, with the results of arming Sinestro providing the Weaponer with a strong reason to seek revenge.  Bedard also said that Kyle Rayner and Sinestro will have a fight in an upcoming issue that takes place during a Halloween event in Greenwich Village.  Bedard also has some plans for John Stewart, commenting that the character has an untapped potential.

Green Lantern Animated Series Will Focus on Red Lanterns

In a New York Comic Con panel moderated by Geoff Johns this afternoon, Bruce Timm and some of the people behind the upcoming Green Lantern animated series provided some initial details about the series which is set to air on the Cartoon Network in November of 2011.  Audience members got to see some of the character designs and were treated to some demo footage from the show.

Timm indicated that five episodes of the show have been recorded, however he wouldn't yet elaborate on the voice casting for the show.  In terms of style and tone, Timm indicated that the animation style was heavily influenced by The Incredibles movie, with the CG animation being done in Taiwan.  While the show will air on the Cartoon Network in what Timm believes will be a primetime slot, viewers can expect that characters will die and that subtle adult humor along the lines of what fans saw in the Justice League animated series will be the norm.

1979 "Legends of the Superheroes" Coming to DVD

Irony is a funny, funny thing.  Just last night my best friend and cousin was over and, as usually happens, we chatted about comics and our shared childhood memories.  We were talking about some of the superhero TV shows that were on in the 1970's from the Nicholas Hammond Spiderman series to Lynda Carter helping us through puberty on Wonder Woman.  With the trend to put old TV shows out on DVD to make some more money off of the nostalgia factor we talked about how it was funny that the Spiderman show has never seen the light of day even with the release of three major motion pictures.

Inevitably the subject of the once seen and often forgotten two part NBC special Legends of the Superheroes from 1979 came up.  So this morning I check the Interwebs for Green Lantern news coming out of the New York Comic Con and what catches my eye?  You guessed it, Warner Brothers is releasing it on DVD later this month!
If you not of the generation of fans who grew up during that era and were desperate for any live action superhero action, this "show" featured two episodes - one where the heroes and villains fought each other ("The Challenge"), and the other done in the vein of a celebrity roast, all the rage in the '70's ("The Roast"), complete with Ed McMahon of Tonight Show fame as emcee.  While done for a  young audience, there is definitely humor which today would be considered politically incorrect and some which was over our heads.

Hal being duped by Sinestro in drag...not kidding!
Adam West and Burt Ward revived their roles as Batman and Robin, while the rest of the heroes (Green Lantern, Flash, Captain Marvel, Huntress, Black Canary, the Atom and Hawkman) were played by relative unknowns.  The villains included Frank Gorshin reprising his role as the Riddler, Sinestro, Weather Wizard, Dr. Sivanna, Aunt Minerva, Mordru, Giganta and Solomon Grundy.  Most of the villains were portrayed by comedians ranging from Charlie Callas as Sinestro to Jeff Altman as the Weather Wizard.

Now, if you've never heard of this show, don't get too excited.  The humor is at the expense of the characters and it definitely is not the finest hour the DC universe has had on celluloid, with this effort categorized along with the dismal Justice League live action pilot and the Superman musical as perhaps the worst adaptations of all time.  But it is one of the only two times that Hal Jordan was seen in live action, the other being the brief appearance at Superman's birthday party TV special.  But what sets this apart is that, unlike the other examples, Legends of the Superheroes wasn't trying to be serious at all even though the humor cannot be saved by the forced laugh track.

For me, I'll be picking it up for the sake of nostalgia and the chance to relive some childhood memories - and there will be some previously unseen footage that I have to see.  Heck, I might even use it as an example when people complain about how bad they thought Watchmen was and moan about how they think Zack Snyder is going to ruin Superman (could it be any more ruined that it was in Superman Returns?!)

So if you're like me and want to celebrate DC's 75th anniversary and all its highs and lows, or if you just want to relive some memories, or you are just morbidly curious, or you're just that much of a completionist, you can order the DVD here.  Here's an example of what your're in for:

Green Lantern Trailer Debuts in November and More From NYCC

This afternoon Geoff Johns spoke about a lot of things in his role as DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer.  Among his comments was confirmation of the news that fans would be able to see the first trailer for Green Lantern in front of the upcoming first part to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in November.

Sprinkled amongst his comments that ran the whole gamut of the DC Universe, Johns had the following to say about the Green Lantern franchise:
  • He said that John Stewart remains an important part of the Green Lantern Corps and that if we loved the Green Lantern books now we will be very happy next year with a major crossover story spanning all three titles.
  • Speaking of books, Johns let "slip" that there would be another new book featuring one of the other Corps in the emotional spectrum
  • Addressing the rumor of a Matt Fraction co-penned story crossing Green Lantern and Iron Man, Geoff could only respond with, "I love Matt Fraction."  He did say that he's open to an inter-company crossover noting that most of the people he plays Halo with are Marvel guys.
  • Fans can expect a Green Lantern / Flash crossover next year as well as the Dex-Starr Valentines Special.
  • Evil Star will make a return to the Green Lantern universe in the near future.
  • Green Lantern #59-60 will deal with the Indigo Tribe with Johns teasing, "And I think the rings are something different than a lot of people think."
  • His schedule is too hectic for Johns to pen anything for the upcoming Green Lantern Animated Series.
  • Despite his seeming love for Marvel he displayed earlier, Johns did have some controversial comments about the notion of creating a shared movie universe like Marvel is doing.  Johns said, "I'm going to speak frankly: I think our characters are bigger than Marvel's."  He went on to elaborate that DC's strategy was more to spend film time wisely with each character getting a spotlight versus throwing things together for sake of it.

Keep checking back throughout the weekend as we follow all the developments and news coming out of the New York Comic Con.

Ryan Reynolds to Pen "Secret Origin" Introduction

In addition to narrating the upcoming documentary on the history of DC Comics, Ryan Reynolds is also penning the introduction to a new edition of the "Green Lantern: Secret Origin" storyline.  The new edition will feature a new cover by Ivan Reis, shown at right.

Reynolds has gone on record as saying that he used the Geoff Johns retelling of Hal Jordan's first days as a Green Lantern as a bible for the character.  The edition is most likely one of many Green Lantern centric trades that will see the light as the June 17, 2011 release date of the motion picture draws ever nearer.

DC Lowers Prices on $3.99 Books

Over on the Source Blog today DC Comics issued a press release of a surprising kind in the day of rising comics prices.  This time a lot of books will be dropping in price from $3.99 to $2.99 with a 2-page  decrease in the number of story pages starting in January.  As a result of this pricing strategy more than 80% of DC's titles will be at the $2.99 price point.

In comments, Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee had the following to say:

“As Co-Publishers, we listened to our fans and to our partners in the retail community who told us that a $3.99 price point for 32 pages was too expensive. Fans were becoming increasingly reluctant to sample new titles and long term fans were beginning to abandon titles and characters that they’d collected for years.” said Dan DiDio, DC Comics Co-Publisher. “We needed a progressive pricing strategy that supports our existing business model and, more importantly, allows this creative industry to thrive for years to come. With the exceptions of oversized comic books, like annuals and specials, we are committed to a $2.99 price point.”
One of the titles affected by this change is Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors.

Official Green Lantern Movie Site Launched

Earlier tonight Geoff Johns tweeted the url for the newly launched Green Lantern movie website, www.greenlantern.com.  While there's nothing there right now other than a nifty flash movie, we can expect that the site will contain much more as time progresses.

The animation is reminiscent of the description of the footage shown at this year's San Diego Comic Con, with a green orb, the physical manifestation of will coalescing and exploding to reveal the film's interpretation of the Green Lantern logo.

DC Universe Online Pushed Back to 2011

Today Sony Online Entertainment issued a press released that included the announcement that the release date for DC Universe Online was pushed back from the November 4th launch date to some time in early 2011.  While changing release dates is nothing to the game industry, it is unusual to see it happen thirty days from the advertised game launch date and it's a move that elicits some concern.  I saw this coming though when the public beta failed to materialize.  The press release, while disappointing, did offer some answers about the absence of a PS3 Collectors Edition and the aforementioned public beta.
