Emerald Warriors #11 Review

The thought that the most recent issue of Emerald Warriors, a non-War of the Green Lanterns issue, would be hitting the stands before the conclusion of the event had me a little puzzled.  My concern centered on how this story could have any weight behind it if it clearly wasn't going to reference the event or any of the fallout from it.  In fact my greater issue with the Green Lantern books in general prior to the relaunch in September is how these books will matter at all.  So with some trepidation I read Emerald Warriors #11 and approached it as a story that may not take place chronologically in order with the rest of the books in the Green Lantern family.

The Story -
The lady Yul's ship is surrounded by Kreuvian warships somewhere in deep space.  Salaak receives their distress beacon and dispatches Guy Gardner to deal with it.  Guy happens to be in Sector 2814 on his way to Earth on vacation.  Arriving on the scene Gardner makes quick work of the Kreuvians, but before he leaves the scene Yul requests an audience with the Green Lantern who rescued her.

Podcast of Oa Episode Two - The Aftermath

Episode two of the Podcast of Oa is here with more discussion about the Green Lantern movie as well as a brief review of the direct to video feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.  We also talk about whether Green Lantern is a character for the 21st Century and we start a new feature asking what we would do in a given situation if we had a power ring.

The show is now available on iTunes, via RSS subscription or you can listen to it right here on the Blog of Oa.

Warner Brothers May Push Forward With Green Lantern Sequel

Despite a sixty six percent drop in box office sales the Hollywood Reporter is indicating that Warner Brothers may continue to move forward with a Green Lantern sequel.  Through June 26 the total box office, domestic and international combined, was $118,389,477.  According to the report Warner Brothers is "somewhat disappointed" in the performance of the film thus far, it still has many places in the world where the movie has yet to appear, and the studio still believes the character has the potential to be a tentpole franchise for them.

The article falls short of stating that a sequel has been officially greenlit, so while the fate of a sequel is not quite sealed it appears that Green Lantern may yet have another chance to shine on the big screen.

Raging Bullets Green Lantern Podcast

This past weekend I sat down with Sean Whelan and Jim Segulin from the Raging Bullets Podcast to talk about the Green Lantern movie, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.  We had some great conversation as always and I will be joining them again in a couple of weeks to talk about the conclusion to the War of the Green Lanterns.

Raging Bullets is available from iTunes or can be downloaded from their website.

Green Lantern Opens With $53.2 Million Weekend

While Green Lantern opened very strong with a midnight Thursday pace that put it ahead of both Thor and X-men: First Class, the film faltered over the weekend and ended up missing the $60 million opening weekend prediction.  While it was thought Sunday that it would top out at $52.7 million a stronger than expected Father's Day tally raised the box office performance to $53.2 million.

While not a disaster, with Cars 2 opening this weekend and Transformers 3 the weekend after that it would be easy to see that the film has a tough road ahead of it.  The softened performance is being directly linked to the brutal reviews given to the film despite a lot of positive responses from film goers at large and the fact that it's the third comic book superhero film of the summer.

Warner Brothers has made no comment about the film's performance since the final total for the first weekend was released and how it affects the sequel potential for the film which was already in the script stage.  It's also too early to gauge how the film's United States ticket sales and critical panning will affect the movie's performance in other parts of the world where it hasn't been released yet.  Despite the lighter than hoped for performance Green Lantern easily won this week's box office battle to be the number one film in the country, sparking a new television spot.

The Podcast of Oa Debuts!

I've been thinking about doing a podcast for a while now and with the movie's release it seemed like the perfect time to jump into it.  Our first episode tackles the Green Lantern film which I recorded on June 17th with my co-host, Bill Giancoli, from Get Ur Geek on Radio. Be aware that we do go into some detail on the plot of the film, so if you have not seen it yet there is some content that may spoil parts of the film.

Reelz Channel Movie Offers Public Reaction to Green Lantern

With all the vitriol from the reviewers, it's pretty interesting to see and hear the comments of real people who actually make the determination on the success or failure of a movie based on their ticket purchases.  Reelz channel has some responses they captured on film that are in start contrast to the harsh reviews.  They also have a review by Leonard Maltin who I've always liked because he watches movies understanding and accepting their genre and providing pretty level headed commentary.

Green Lantern Movie Review

With my self-imposed exile from the site over and some time to digest and process the film I'm ready to return here to share with you my thoughts about the Green Lantern film.  I want to preface this with a little editorial and just say something right up front before diving into this review.

I really believe that people should make up their own minds about films before trusting a reviewer, whether a movie critic or someone like myself, because people bring their own predisposed opinions of the subject matter, the actors, the studio, the property, whatever to them when they sit down to watch a movie.  For lack of a better statement, people should have the willpower to decide for themselves what they want to watch and not worry about what someone else thinks.

If you're not sure about laying down your money on a film and you wholly trust the opinion of someone else, do that, but I warn you that in the case of this film you will find that there hasn't been a time that people have had such polarized opinions about Green Lantern since Emerald Twilight was released.  There is literally outright harsh comments being made from critics as well as fans with unreasonable expectations on one side and people claiming it's the best film of the summer on the other.

The Muppets Take on Green Lantern

I'm breaking my promise to myself not to post anything until after I've had a chance to see the film for myself and trying not to read too much on the Internet in hopes of having my own clear take on things.  I had to, thought, because this take on the movie by the Muppets was just too great to pass up.  In their continuing line of spoof trailers they Muppets present the following.  All I can say is "thank you" to the Muppets for giving me something to smile about.....

Cover to New Guardians #1 Released

In addition to the two covers for Green Lantern Corps and Red Lantern Corps first post-relaunch issues, DC Comics also released the image to the first issue of the Green Lantern: New Guardians book which is being written by Tony Bedard with covers and interiors by Tyler Kirkham and Batt. We already know that Kyle Rayner will be the Green Lantern in the book and it looks like he's being joined by Arkillo, Munk, Glomulus, Bleez, Saint Walker and an unknown Star Sapphire that I'm going to guess is Fatality.  This leaves just the main Green Lantern title lacking an official cover release.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Review

Back in the 1990's there was a Green Lantern video game in development for the Sega Genesis which never saw the light of day.  Since then we've seen GL in other games such as Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, Justice League Heroes and DC Universe Online.  , but this past week saw the release of Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters for all of the current generation of game consoles plus the Nintendo 3DS.  This review pertains to the Xbox 360 version of the game but my comments will no doubt apply to the Playstation 3 version as well.  The Nintendo versions of Rise of the Manhunters was developed by a different studio and their version of the game is completely different than this one.

The Xbox and Playstation versions of the game were developed by Double Helix Games, a studio that doesn't exactly have the best record out there, but it seems that this game is definitely one that they can be proud of despite some flaws because Rise of the Manhunters is a lot of fun to play with great visuals and a fun combat system.  However the shortcomings in the game keep it in the category of good games that could have been great.  No, this isn't as bad as Iron Man 2 or the new Thor game, but it's also certainly no Batman: Arkham Asylum, either.

How to Join the Corps

A few days ago it was announced that people in and around eleven select cities would be able to participate in a unique promotion for the Green Lantern film, those cities being Los Angeles, New York City, Vancouver, San Diego, Miami, Atlanta, Cleveland, Kansas City, Sacramento, St. Louis, and New Orleans.  Today we have information on how to participate in the event that takes place on Monday, June 13th for some of the cities.  If you participate please contact me with information on your experience and take pictures to share so we can post it here!

Here's the information for how to join in for each city:

Green Lantern Press Conference Transcript

SuperHeroHype was present at the recent press conference where most of the cast and crew were assembled to take questions about the Green Lantern movie as we enter the final week before release.  The conversation covered a wide range of topics from Peter Sarsgaard's makeup to the subject of sequels to comparisons to Batman and Superman.  Here's the text from the entire press conference courtesy of SuperHeroHype.

Q: Martin, you brought James Bond back twice. You brought Zorro to modern screens and now you're launching this DC Comic book franchise. What's ideal for you in creating and launching new things and what things will be on the DVD?

Director Martin Campbell
Martin Campbell: Well, I'm cheap. No, no. The thing is that I've never done a comic book movie before. Superheroes, I guess, yes. Bond is a kind of a form of a superhero and Zorro, obviously, but I've never done a superhero movie before. I wasn't even versed in the comic when it came through the door. Once having read them and so forth, it just sort of fascinated me, the whole world of Green Lantern – going to another planet, going to the center of the universe. So that's really why I did it. What is it about me? These things aren't about me. These things are a huge team effort by everybody. It's always sort of handed across to the director and I'm on the guy on the floor, certainly, but Donald, my producer, a huge contribution from him as with Greg, the writer, and the actors. So, unlike a lot of movies these things are very much a team effort, and in this case particularly so.

A Corps of New Videos as the Media Flood Continues

We are on the home stretch and the publicity for the Green Lantern film has reached a fever pitch.  There are so many new featurettes and interviews playing on the Internet and on television that it's hard to keep them all straight.  Here are some of the highlights.

First off, Yahoo movies has a new featurette that includes comments from the cast and crew as well as Geoff Johns talking all about the scale and scope of the Green Lantern universe.

New TV Spot and Entertainment Tonight Coverage

Another TV spot has emerged, this one featuring more constructs.  Watch at your own risk of being spoiled.  Entertainment Tonight also featured another segment on the film with this particular clip dealing with Ryan Reynolds' diet during film-making and featuring comments from Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong.

List of Upcoming Green Lantern Media Appearances

Just like any other big budget film, the cast of Green Lantern will be making the rounds at a number of media outlets over the course of next week.  Peter Sarsgaard, who play Hector Hammond, made an appearance on Conan last evening, though the interview skewed more towards Sarsgaard's personal life than promoting the film.  I could not find any listing for Mark Strong, Geoffrey Rush, Martin Campbell, or Michael Clark Duncan making any appearances, but I did find one television special that will air on June 16th.  Here is a list of the television appearances I have found so far.  If you learn of anything I've missed, please leave a comment with the information so that other fans will know about it, too.

6/14 Today - NBC - Blake Lively
6/14 Regis and Kelly - Blake Lively
6/14 Late Show with David Letterman - CBS - Ryan Reynolds
6/15 Today - NBC - Ryan Reynolds
6/15 Regis and Kelly - Ryan Reynolds
6/15 Tonight Show with Jay Leno - NBC - Blake Lively
6/16 G4 - 8pm - Green Lantern Special with cast and crew
6/16 Conan - TBS - Ryan Reynolds (added 6/13)

New Green Lantern Videos as the PR Campaign Goes Full Throttle

There have been a bunch of new videos released on the Internet as well as tv in the final week before the release of the Green Lantern film.  Here's some of the highlights, but be forewarned that some of these clips reveal previously unseen moments from the film.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights Blu-ray Review

The latest DC Universe animated film, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, was officially released yesterday in both digital and optical disk formats, the second animated film featuring Green Lantern.  While not linked to Green Lantern: First Flight in terms of continuity, the fact that the creators choose to take a shortcut and use the same character design could certainly add a bit of confusion if you began watching this feature thinking you were getting a sequel.  Like Batman: Gotham Knights, Emerald Knights is an anthology of five animated sequences held together by an over arcing story, however where the Batman anthology seemed a little disjointed by an unclear narrative and diverse art styles Bruce Timm and friends have done a better job to put together a film that serves as a primer for anyone new to the Green Lantern universe that remains satisfying to long time fans.

This review covers the Blu-ray edition of the movie, so some elements such as special features may not apply depending on the version you purchase.

Latest Green Lantern Movie TV Spot is Heavy on the Villains

Here's the latest TV spot showing up on channels all over the place, this one shows a little more of the villains from the film, including an early variation of Krona possessed by Parallax.  It also sounds like more of the real movie score has made its way into this one.

Dr. Waller Makes It Personal

Amanda Waller
If you've been following along, there's a great ARG going on for the Green Lantern film, starting with a group of astronomers tracking mysterious red lights in the sky and an advertisement in the Green Lantern comics.  That led to lobbying Amanda Waller to point the Spitzer telescope towards the lights, seen in the area of Cygnus.  People were then asked to analyze the data, isolating areas of interest and specifically the red lights and the newly observed rings of green light.  References on Waller's blog to various DC characters aside it was little more than a fun diversion....and then it changed.

After analyzing a number of the images some people were asked to submit their email address to Dr. Waller and a couple of them were later sent emails from Robert Frazer, one of her staff.  The email contained an audio file of a distress call coming from Fentara of Space Sector 2815 to Sinestro and listening to the audio allowed you to witness an attack on Fentara as he sought to defend himself against an unknown, frightening assailant.  The audio is spectacular and I present it again here if you haven't heard it yet.

New Green Lantern Video Interview with Alan Burnett and Bruce Timm

Comic Book Resources has a great video interview with Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, two of the creators behind the DC Universe animated direct to video features.  This particular interview, shot during WonderCon,  focuses heavily on Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, which releases officially on June 7th.  The interview touches on the emphasis on Hal Jordan as the main Green Lantern, the choices for the stories in this new anthology, as well as the upcoming Justice League: Doom animated feature and the tragic loss of Dwayne McDuffie.
