Green Lantern Continues to Do Well On Home Video

Green Lantern continues to do well on the United States home video market, maintaining the number two spot on the overall Blu-ray sales charts for the week ending on October 23rd behind the first week release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  Fifty-six percent of the home video sales of Green Lantern that week came from the Blu-ray format.

U.S. Domestic sales number for the week of October 16th show that Green Lantern sold 315,672 copies on the DVD format and 494,057 copies on Blu-ray, with a total sales volume of $16,728,728.00 for the three days the film was available for purchase.  Digital sales numbers have not been revealed yet, but the film has done well so far domestically, although a strong release calendar of home video releases over the next several weeks will likely see the sales number decline.  There is no word yet on a potential sequel getting the green light and it could be that Warner Brothers is waiting to see how the video market affects the film's overall financial performance before making a decision.

Robot Chicken Spoofs Green Lantern

You either love Robot Chicken or hate it and I count myself in the first category even though my wife just shakes her head when I watch it.  Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns has been writing for the show and at the New York Comic Con announced that the show would be doing a DC Comics tribute airing in the summer of 2012.  New episodes of the stop motion action figure comedy show have started airing Sunday evening during the Adult Swim block of programming on the Cartoon Network and one of the skits was a hilarious bit between Hal and Sinestro.  Caution - this is  not be safe for work.

Green Lantern Corps #2 Review

When writer Peter Tomasi compared the new volume of Green Lantern Corps to Call of Duty he wasn't kidding. This issue takes our team out of the frying pan and puts them squarely into the fire as all hell breaks loose and provides some jaw dropping moments as we begin to learn more about the antagonists to this story and what they are trying to achieve, beings that Tomasi recently referred to as "The Keepers".

The Story -
It's ass-kicking time!
Our team of Green Lanterns is stunned by the attack on Nerros and the slaughter of the inhabitants of this peaceful water world.  As Guy, John, Sheriff, Isamot Kol, Hannu, Vandor and Brik notice the missing fingers from their fallen Corpsmen, they at first think that their rings had been stolen, but Salaak assures them that the rings are seeking successors.  As the seven Green Lanterns wonder about the rationale behind the attack and take care of their dead comrades, an identical disturbance to the one that devastated Nerros is detected on another planet in the sector.  Vowing justice for all of the fallen the team leave the dead world behind to find the attackers.

On an unnamed world our killer presents the severed digits to his leader as we learn that something is about to arrive.  Turning to face a barren world the skeletal mouth of the leader seems to smile as a portal opens up filling a void with the water that was taken from Nerros.  There are several lanterns which glow green, much like the emotionless, mechanical orbs that constitute the eyes of the mysterious figure, who orders his underling to address a problem on the planet Xabas.

A universal truth on a planetary scale
On Xabas the the team of Green Lanterns have arrived in time to see the portal sucking in trees and the planet's inhabitants.  As they try to save the people they connect the dots that whoever is behind this is trying to steal natural resources.  The power of the portal is too strong for their constructs and the matter is made much more complicated with the arrival of what looks like space ninjas brandishing swords which look like their are made from the energy of will.

The legion of attackers have a distinct advantage over the seven Green Lanterns because they not only severely outnumber the team they also appear to be immune to the team's rings and constructs.  Isamot Kol, forever the sacrificing warrior, goes to blow the portal up using John's thought that an explosion was the only way to seal the vortex and instructs his ring to detonate the energy shield covering the portal when he makes contact.

The number of foes calls for drastic action
The Thanagarian's gambit works and the portal shuts down just as two the attackers reach John and Guy and clamp their hands down on the Green Lantern's ring hands, telling the two Humans that "Your will is our will, Lanterns."  Not to be shut down, the two veteran ring slingers psych themselves up by reciting the oath and blow the two attackers threw the air before taking it to their foes once again as they realize that the key is to have more willpower so they can overcome their enemies.

New foes, or old?
Meanwhile we find that Isamot Kol did not die in the explosion, instead appearing in the worst place possible, on the other side of the portal and surrounded by darkness...but not alone.  On Xabas the Green Lantern's have triumphed over their adversaries and their interrogation leads to the revelation that it wasn't the forestation that was the target, but the people of Xabas that was the goal due to their ability to create a breathable atmosphere from the chemicals they exhale.  We also come to understand that Xabas was the final planet needed to complete their mission and that their is bad blood between them and the Green Lantern Corps, something that must go back to the mysterious past of the Corps which we continue to learn was far more than we'd been led to understand.

Just as the Corpsmen are about to transport their attackers to Oa, the portal reappears and Isamot Kol emerges, falling to the feet of his comrades.  The appearance of Kol, completely limbless, is a shock to everyone, us included, but the Thanagarian alerts them to the greater problem which ends the issue, the emergence of hundreds of new attackers intent on finishing their mission.

The Writing -
What more can I say other than Pete Tomasi once again delivers an action packed story that keeps the pages turning until you reach the end and lamenting the four week wait for the next issue?  This issue is a great page turner complete with enough revelations about our new enemies to keep us curious and enough plot and character progression to keep the pace moving.  And the shocking state of Isamot Kol was a jaw dropper for certain!

We've seen Isamot in a similar situation after Blackest Night, Green Lantern Corps #47 specifically.  In that issue we saw the surface dweller of Thanagar donate his legs to his partner, Rannian Vath Sarn, after he lost his during a Black Lantern attack.  At the time Isamot Kol was unsure if he could regenerate his legs but we've not seen him try to recover from this dramatic of a turn, and the situation certainly looks dire for him considering how outnumbered his six comrades are going to be when the action picks up again with issue 3.

Tomasi has also done a great job in creating yet another new layer to the Green Lantern mythology for us old timers who've felt like we've seen it all and I really appreciate how the creative teams have gone to great lengths to add more to what we know about the Green Lantern universe without necessarily erasing anything important to the lore that we are so fond of.

The Art -
I've been critical of Fernando Pasarin in the past, but I have to say that any qualms I've had with the quality of his work have been put to rest with these first two issues.  I only hope that my new found faith in his work isn't the result of having a lot of lead time that will catch up with him down the road.  I also have to praise the rest of the art team, Inker Scott Hanna, Colorist Gabe Eltaeb and Letterer Pat Brosseau for doing a great job of helping to convey the sense of emotion and frantic energy that Pete Tomasi's script demanded.

What Do I Think?
Green Lantern Corps continues to be a fantastic book with Pete Tomasi at the helm.  Like the main Green Lantern title I finish each issue wishing it were longer and dreading the wait until we get the next chapter.  In my mind both these titles are the cream of the crop of DC's cosmic titles and my two favorite books overall, just above Batman, Batgirl and Aquaman.  Four out of five lanterns.

More Goodies from the Noble Collection

Green Lantern Green Spinning Ring
The Noble Collection has continued to increase the size of their Green Lantern movie collection, and recently they added four more new products to their line including three more rings and a pendant.  Like many of the items in the collection these new items are able to be pre-ordered with a shipping date of December 1st.

At $45 is another spinning ring, very similar to the ring that was added about a week ago, only this ring has the Green Lantern insignia in sterling silver on a green rotating band rather than the black on silver the original offering had.   This ring is available in whole ring sizes from 8-12.

Green Lantern Steel Emblem Ring
The Steel Emblem Ring offers a familiar variation to the Green Lantern power ring, featuring the insignia in a bit larger scale on a stainless steel band.  The ring, also in whole sizes from 8-12, sells for $39.

Also selling for $39 and being offered in whole sizes 8-12 is the Green Lantern Green Signet Ring in stainless steel.  This ring features the logo in green on silver traditionally styled signet ring.

Green Lantern Tops US DVD Sales Charts

Green Lantern might have been a box office disappointment, but the film did quite well on the U.S. home video sales charts.  For home video sales for the week ending October 16th Green Lantern was the top selling DVD and the second most selling Blu-ray, narrowly behind the mega-selling Disney movie, The Lion King.  The sales numbers come from the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Green Lantern's results are great considering the movie did not go on sale until October 14th meaning it's performance was based on three days of sales.  While this is definitely good news the initial sales of any major film is usually much higher during the first week due to people pre-ordering and sales stimulated by advertising.  What will be important for Warner Brothers is how the film performs over the coming weeks and the sales of the home video may be one of  determining factors in their decision on whether or not to proceed with a sequel.

Video rental and digital sales rankings and actual sales numbers have not yet become available.

Justice League Doom Trailer Debuts

The official trailer for the 2012 direct to video DC Animated feature "Justice League: Doom" debuted today, showing the animated adaptation of Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel" Justice League story arc.  The animated feature features the voices of many actors long associated with DC Comics characters, including Nathan Fillion returning to the role of Hal Jordan.  The trailer looks good, although the appearance of one of my pet peeves shows up - Hal Jordan using his power ring on the wrong hand.  Green Lantern goof up aside this looks like it's shaping up to be very good.

Geoff Johns Comments on GL Film and More at NYCC

DC Comics held a Green Lantern panel featuring Peter Tomasi, Geoff Johns and Tony Bedard this evening at the New York Comic Con and the trio revealed several tidbits about the coming months in the Green Lantern family of books, and Geoff Johns make some comments about the Green Lantern movie and a potential sequel.

With regard to the main Green Lantern title, writer Geoff Johns talked about the second arc of the book being "The Secret of the Indigo Tribe".  In an upcoming issue Sinestro will be showing Hal Jordan how to do something with the power ring that no Green Lantern has ever done before, and Johns said that the Sinestro Corps would deal with that little problem of being named after someone who's not their leader anymore.  Larfleeze will be getting another special after last year's successful Christmas issue did so well, and despite wanting to put a moratorium on the character he will be appearing in issue 4 of Green Lantern: New Guardians - and he'll also appear in the Green Lantern Animated Series.

Switching hats a moment to his Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment role, Johns mentioned that he's working with the Robot Chicken crew to put together a DC Special in similar vein to the show's popular Star Wars trilogy of specials. Johns has worked on the Cartoon Network show for several seasons and a crossover is no surprise considering the network's ties to DC.  When asked about the movie Johns commented that he loved seeing the characters brought to life and getting exposure to more people that get reached by the comics medium, and said that "I hope to get the character gets another film.  It will be in live action again, I guarantee it.".

Peter Tomasi
When a fan asked about the possibility of seeing Sodam Yat, Green Lantern Corps writer Peter Tomasi said that they as a creative team have taken the character off the shelf for the immediate future.  Likewise, G'Nort will not be seen anytime soon.

Tony Bedard said that he is considering giving Kyle Rayner a new love interest and when asked about the Green Lantern timeline, specifically about the length of time that Kyle was Green Lantern, Bedard indicated that Emerald Twilight took place two years before the current point in time.  While the New Guardians title will feature all the various facets of the emotional spectrum, the writing team indicated that we wouldn't be seeing the White Entity appear there.

Tomasi revealed that the antagonists in the Green Lantern Corps title were called the Keepers, the name derived from their past role of being the keepers of the Power Batteries.  The cover to Green Lantern issue #5 was also revealed during the panel.

Noble Collection Doubles Their Offerings

Ten days ago I posted an entry about the Noble Collection and their three offerings for the Green Lantern items, lamenting in particular the absence of a high quality, wearable power ring.  Some time since then they have doubled the size of their Green Lantern collection to six items, and this time they've got what I've been waiting for.

At $145 the Noble Collection is offering a sterling silver ring that will be available in whole sizes from 8-12.  The ring is not movie authentic featuring a gem stone in the center and a band which narrows towards the back.  The sterling silver ring can be pre-ordered but will not ship until December.

The Green Lantern Prop Ring also doesn't ship until December and comes enclosed in a Green Lantern branded display chamber.  The prop ring retails for $35 and appears to be a bit bigger and chunkier that the sterling silver ring.  While their description says that the prop ring is a size 11 the Noble Collection site does not say whether or not the ring can be removed from the display unit, but the image gives the impression that it is. Given the price point, however, I doubt that this version is designed to be worn as much as it is to be displayed.

The third and final new item is the Green Lantern Spinning Ring.  The spinning ring comes in whole sizes from 8-12 and is made from sterling silver.  Also shipping in December, this $45 dollar ring features a band of Green Lantern logos which presumably spin around the wearer's finger.

Green Lantern #2 Review

September's Green Lantern #1 was the third best selling book in a month where DC Comics dominated the sales charts with the relaunch of their entire line.  That's a good showing for a title where the main character is decidedly not the one you'd expect from a book that's been one of DC's flagship titles.  With issue number two writer Geoff Johns continues to explore the complex relationship between Hal Jordan and Sinestro and puts the pieces in place to put these two allies turned enemies side by side for a common goal, whether Hal Jordan wants to help or not.

The Story -
We left Hal Jordan outside his former apartment last month facing Sinestro, who has come to offer Hal another chance to wear a power ring.  Issue two picks up moments later with Sinestro busting Hal's chops for using his ring as a superhero rather than making the universe better, and of course take every opportunity to get under Jordan's skin.  Hal's characteristic response of defiance is big on bravado but lacks teeth due to his diminished status, and when Sinestro constructs a ring for Jordan he learns that the ring comes with the limitation that Sinestro can turn it on or off at will.

Sinestro temps Hal with his drug of choice
Their conversation is cut short when Hal leaves to deal with a disaster on a bridge in Coast City, ticking off Sinestro for what he sees as a lack of focus.  Hal's dealings with the people in need of help underscores the notion of Green Lantern as superhero that Sinestro alluded to earlier, so Hal's ring is de-powered putting everyone in harms way.  Hal lunges at Sinestro but he is stopped cold as forced to watch as horrific events are about to unfold.

It's at this moment that Sinestro proves his point by dealing with the larger problem of the bridge rather than the individual people, saving everyone in one set of actions as Hal watches on shocked by the turn of events.  Attention turns to the cause of the bridge's near collapse, an attack by a Sinestro Corps member, Gorgor, who's goal is to kill Sinestro so that he will be named the new leader of the Corps.  Sinestro makes short work of Gorgor and the issue closes with Sinestro telling Hal Jordan why he came to offer him a ring - to take out the Sinestro Corps for what they've done to Korugar.

The first of many threats our duo are bound to encounter

The Writing -
Geoff Johns gets Hal Jordan and Sinestro and it's the continued development of their relationship that makes this issue a great read.  The tension between these two is tangible on every panel they share, and that drives this book forward.  We see two men who are so similar yet so different that they can't help but hate each other yet you know deep down they are each the guy the other would want on his team when the poop hits the fan.  In this situation they need each other to get what they want and as a reader you have to know that this is going to be a great pairing as the rest of this arc unfolds.

The notion that the Sinestro Corps would put a bounty on Sinestro's head is perfectly logical and the bounty being the leadership of the Corps makes for the perfect storm for Sinestro who will be under constant pursuit while trying to take revenge on his former followers with only his greatest enemy by his side.  I particularly liked how Sinestro dealt with the bridge attack and I thought that he was about to teach Hal a harsh lesson and found myself as surprised as Hal was when Sinestro did the right thing. The way Sinestro responded to the gratitude of the people was priceless as well!

The Art -
I've found myself undecided about Doug Mahnke's art and I think I finally know why.  I think he does a great job overall and there are times when his work really, really shines.  But what I've discovered is that while I like the way he draws Hal Jordan, it's only when he's wearing the Green Lantern uniform.  There's something about the way he draws Hal's face when there's no mask on that just hasn't set right with me.  I know art is subjective for the most part and many readers may disagree, but there's something I can't quite put my finger on that doesn't look right.

Other than that the art in this issue is great and I love how smug and confident Mahnke makes Sinestro look.

What Do I Think?
Another great issue from the creative team of Johns and Mahnke and well worth picking up.  Green Lantern is still firing on all cylinders in the new DCU as the creative team continues to use the fallout of the War of the Green Lanterns to explore these iconic characters.  Four out of five lanterns.

New Clip Spotlights Hector Hammond

Superhero Hype has a new behind the scenes clip from the Green Lantern blu-ray focused on the evolution of Hector Hammond from page to screen and the makeup efforts to help actor Peter Sarsgaard bring the character to life.  The home video release is this Friday, October 14th and there are several versions of the film to choose from including the original theatrical version on DVD and Blu-ray as well as extended cut and 3D versions in combo packs and a steelbook collectors case.

Best Buy to Offer Steelbook Edition of Green Lantern

In the United States big box electronics retailer Best Buy seems to be the only store chain offering any type of exclusive for the October 14th release of the Green Lantern movie on home video.  In their advertisement for the week they have included a steelbook exclusive edition of the extended edition.  Strangely they aren't offering a steelbook edition for the 3D release which could have adverse results for the 3D format which has struggled to gain momentum for fans who want the metal case.  The steelbook edition will also be available in several European markets as well.

The steelbook edition will be on sale this week at U.S. Best Buy retail stores and online for $22.99.
