Animated Series Episode 5 "Heir Apparent" Review

A few episodes into the animated series and with every one I end up saying to myself that this is the best of the series only to have that trumped the following Saturday.  It's a wonderful problem to have and this week's installment, "Heir Apparent', continues the trend.  With a script by Jennifer Keene that pulls from the rich history found in the Green Lantern comics the audience is treated to the origin of a fan favorite character and more great character moments that continues to define the traits of our main cast.

On Betrassus, a world where feudal society meets futuristic technology, the crew of the Interceptor arrives with hopes to recruit the Green Lantern of the sector, Dulock [sp], and when he goes missing before taking the hand of Queen Iolande it's up to Hal to prevent a Betrassian warrior from getting the crown while he and the crew solve the mystery of the missing Green Lantern.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #7 Review

Green Lantern: New Guardians has had a wonderful buildup in terms of bringing together characters which should be at each others' throats and slowly melding them together into a unique team.  While they certainly aren't friends (yet), the alliance being built between the various Corps of the emotional spectrum is compelling and it's what motivates me to look forward to this title each and every month.  Tony Bedard's solid writing and Tyler Kirkham's great artwork doesn't hurt, either.  This week's seventh issue of the series provides some more great character moments and a compelling back story for Invictus - and perhaps a little bit more in terms of DC's cosmic history.

The Story -
Saint Walker remains the last New Guardian standing from the assault of Invictus in issue six and the Blue Lantern's attempt to heal Invictus' pain is rewarded with getting a glimpse at the distant past when Invictus was one of many beings from the Vegan star system who brought peace and prosperity to the planets in the system such as Okaara, Tamaran and, surprisingly, Maltus.

Animated Series Episode 4 "Into the Abyss" Review

With each new episode of Green Lantern: The Animated Series I find myself truly reconnecting with my inner child, and I wholly mean that in the best possible way.  As I sit and watch each episode I catch myself smiling a lot, not just from the humor that the writer's have put in each episode but because the team behind this show has really captured the elements of the Green Lantern mythology that made me latch onto it in first place.  From the goals and mission of the Corps to the imagination stirring science fiction concepts to the characterization of Hal Jordan, a man who will go to any length to do the right thing no matter what.  And that leaves me feeling so positive about the notion that out there somewhere kids are getting exposed to this and feeling the same thing and hopefully illustrating some important life lessons along the way.

Green Lantern Corps #7 Review

With the battle with the Keepers over all that's left to do is pick up the pieces and honor the dead.  This is the focus of issue seven of Green Lantern Corps and the repercussions of John Stewart's decision in issue six to break Kirrt's neck start to emerge as he chooses to deliver the fallen comrade's body to his family.

The Story -
On Oa Morro delivers Kirrt's final rites in the crypts of Oa and it quickly becomes clear that John Stewart has witheld the true nature of Kirrt's last moments, painting him as the one who broke them free from their captivity and dying in the process.  Guy Gardner is called before the Guardians who begin to take him to task for executing two Sinestro Corps members to gain an advantage against the Keepers but the human relates his actions to those of the United States at the end of World War II and the choice to kill thousands in order to presumably save millions.

Animated Series Episode 3 "Razer's Edge" Review

Since the sneak peek two part Green Lantern: The Animated Series debut this past November I've been counting the days until we had a chance to see more of the CG series on the Cartoon Network.  The "Beware My Power...." episodes provided us with a great look at what to expect when the new episodes began airing and this week the third episode of the series, "Razer's Edge", provided us with a look at Razer's backstory as well as the first appearance of the Spider Guild.

The episode revolves around Hal and Kilowog dropping the Red Lantern Razer off on a prison planet run by the Spider Guild, who this continuity are not the ancient enemies of the Guardians they are in the comics.  The leader of the prison, Myglom takes Razer off to his cell and the Green Lanterns depart on the Interceptor.  When an escaped prisoner is discovered hiding out on their ship, Hal and Kilowog recapture him, but when the creature, Goggan, tells them of the torture the prisoners live with Hal calls for an investigation, nobly pointing out that justice is justice for everyone, even the criminals.

Green Lantern Animated Series News from WonderCon

Giancarlo Volpe
Yesterday WonderCon kicked off the opening of the convention season in Anaheim, California and today during day two's activities DC Entertainment hosted a special DC Nation panel talking about the new Cartoon Network programming.  Green Lantern: The Animated Series producers Giancarlo Volpe and Jim Krieg were on hand to talk about the new show and show off a four and a half minute reel of footage showing off some great things we can expect to see this season.

During the panel the producers hinted at seeing Sinestro at some point down the road and when asked during the Q&A about characters like Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner Krieg responded that we might see some characters "like them".  Volpe also responded to a call for a Blackest Night type of story in the animated series to which he replied that he has an idea of how to do it and whether or not they could do an adaptation would depend on the success of the show.

The following reel was shared with those in attendance and does contain some spoilers about some of the characters we will see in upcoming weeks, so anyone who doesn't want to know should not watch the video.

Green Lantern #7 Review

The Secret of the Indigo Tribe is a story arc I've really be looking forward to since Geoff Johns first mentioned it a while ago.  Of all the groups making use of the power of the emotional spectrum the enigmatic Indigo Tribe has really sparked my curiosity with their unusual language and the way in which they are chosen and, well, perhaps indoctrinated into the group.  Plus there's the intriguing connection between the Tribe and Abin Sur that  sparks a bit of creative speculation about how Hal's predecessor might connect to them which fuels me between issues.  This week the seventh issue of the post relaunch Green Lantern title kicks off the new story arc and it looks like we are in for another spectacular journey.

Red Lanterns #7 Review

There have been a lot of plots running through the Red Lanterns series but as many fans will point out there doesn't seem to have been a traditionally defined storyline through the first six issues.  That's not to say that the book has been completely scatter-shot as we've started to see some cross between the various plotlines.  In issue six most of the pages were dedicated to establishing Rankorr as the second Red Lantern of Earth, but unlike Dex-Starr the human recruit has shown to be a little different than most members of the rage brigade.  This issue starts to pull some of these subplots together and it seems that we are on a collision course for a major upheaval in the ranks of the Red Lanterns.

Green Lantern 101 - Guy Gardner

People either love Guy Gardner or hate him, but as the second Green Lantern of Earth the outspoken red head has a long and storied history dating back to 1968.  Like Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner was created by legendary comic book creators John Broome and Gil Kane, however many fans know very little about the history of the man who could have been chosen over Hal and the history that has shaped him into the character we love and hate today.
