Green Lantern Corps #10 Review

All the Green Lantern books continue their collision course for what will be a very eventful August and the coming arrival of the Third Army. For Green Lantern Corps part, John Stewart stands guilty of murder and ready to face the harshest of punishments for actions shown be taken out of the context which might show his justification. John has seemingly accepted the verdict and waits in the gallows, but the big question going into issue ten is whether Guy Gardner will stand by and do nothing to protect his new found status in the Corps, or will he stand defiant against the Alpha Lanterns and provide the Guardians with the reason they need to get him off the playing board?

Our Exclusive Conversation with Giancarlo Volpe

Bill Giancoli and I recently had the great opportunity to have a conversation with Giancarlo Volpe, producer of "Green Lantern: The Animated" series to talk about the show for our Podcast of Oa 1st anniversary episode.  Giancarlo spent the hour sharing some of the behind the scenes decision making that went into the show's creation as well as some of the tough decisions that had to be made to remain faithful to the source material while still fitting the time and budgetary constraints they are faced with.  Along the way we find out some things that we cut from the "Homecoming" finale, his thoughts on the feature film, what the censors had to say about the Star Sapphires and hints of what's to come this fall when the second batch of episodes begin airing.

Green Lantern 10 Review

Green Lantern number ten concludes “The Secret of the Indigo Tribe” arc and while we don’t get to learn much more about the language of the Tribe in the conclusion of the story there are more than enough moments to make this one of the more memorable stories since Blackest Night. When we last left Hal Jordan and Sinestro they were surrounded by the rest of the Indigo Tribe, restored to their original sociopathic lives by the destruction of the Indigo Central Battery in issue nine.

Composer Frederik Wiedmann
Green Lantern: The Animated Series fans are due for a treat before the next thirteen episodes debut on the Cartoon Network.  Amazon has revealed that a CD will be released on August 21st from La-La Land Records, the company behind many film and television soundtrack releases.  While La-La Land Records has no information about an upcoming release, the Amazon listing notes that the CD will contain more than seventy minutes of material from the series.

The score for the animated series pilot was previously nominated for an Annie Award last December, however it did not win the honor.  Composer Frederik Wiedmann's work on the series is available now from Amazon for pre-order for $18.04.

The Justice League Movie - What Does it Mean For Green Lantern?

It's hard not to get excited about the news that DC is going to move forward with a Justice League film, but then again we've been here before so the cynic in many fans has their enthusiasm on hold until they actually see a trailer for the film.  But what's different this time is the huge success Marvel's Avengers film and Warner Brothers in a position to either get the DC film universe rolling to turn their back on the notion of cashing in on the characters they own and ceding the superhero film genre to others.  There's a sense of reality about this one, notions stoked by various rumor that lead me to think that we will get a movie this time and I think that the future of the Green Lantern on film is definitely hitched to the Justice League wagon.

Red Lanterns #10 Review

With Ed Benes gone the Red Lanterns start a new era with the book's new regular artist, Miguel Sepulveda. Sepulveda brings a fresh take on the Red Lantern Corps and this debut issue is an indication of things to come I think we are in for a treat in the coming months.  Issue ten of Red Lanterns is the second part of a crossover with Stormwatch, another book that features the Peter Milligan / Miguel Sepulveda creative team. In Stormwatch issue nine Skallox met up with the Stormwatch team and didn't fair too well, losing his ring hand and ring in the process before being put in stasis for observation.  Red Lanterns issue ten follows up on this plot while also advancing some of the other subplots that Milligan has been juggling for several months now.

September 2012 Green Lantern Solicitations

The September 2012 solictations from DC Comics for the Green Lantern family of books has been released for the one year anniversary of the relaunch of the DC Universe.  All the issues for this month are "zero issues" focusing in many of the books on what changes were made to the origins and backgrounds of DC characters before returning to the regular numbers next month.

Among the more intriguing plotlines for "zero month" is the rest of the origin of Pandora in Justice League and what information about the upcoming Trinity War, plus the debut of the mysterious new Green Lantern from the Free Comic Book Day issue.  The publication schedule has also been changed for the Green Lantern titles, with Red Lanterns moving to the end of the month and the rest of the book moving forward a week to fill in the gap.  Whether this is a permanent change or something unique to "zero month" in unknown, but the description for Red Lanterns hints that the prophecy revealed in that issue might be kick off to the Third Army arc and might explain the schedule change.

Commentary - Do We Have the Ability to Overcome Great Controversy?

I've been sitting back and watching the events surrounding the announcement of Alan Scott's sexual orientation with a number of different feelings, and being an uber Green Lantern fan and knowing that people do come to this site for Green Lantern news and information I feel the obligation to discuss my own views on the topic.  I feel a little conflicted to be honest, but more over the way we as a society respond to the subject more than the topic itself.

To the issue of Alan Scott's homosexuality my opinion is a resounding "I don't really care".  After forty seven years on this planet and nearly twenty five years of marriage I'm pretty secure in my own heterosexuality and I'm not terribly intimidated by it, nor do I find it worthy of much energy in stressing over it.  I'm also well beyond the stage of thinking I need a character "just like me" to relate to because, quite frankly, that's too much of a juvenile egocentric notion for me to subscribe to.

The Podcast of Oa Episode 23

In this episode of the Podcast of Oa hosts Bill Giancoli and Myron Rumsey discuss Green Lantern Corps #9 and Green Lantern: New Guardians #9 and how all the books are on a collision course this summer before everything comes to a head in August’s Green Lantern Annual. We also talk about the epic final two episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series and how well Warner Brothers Animation has captured the essence of the Green Lantern universe.

While this episode was recorded before the announcement about Alan Scott’s sexual preference we have a conversation about the notion of a homosexual Green Lantern, plus we reveal the winner to last episode’s “Nok Nok” joke contest and share comments from listeners and followers on our Facebook page.
