Green Lantern Movie Review

With my self-imposed exile from the site over and some time to digest and process the film I'm ready to return here to share with you my thoughts about the Green Lantern film.  I want to preface this with a little editorial and just say something right up front before diving into this review.

I really believe that people should make up their own minds about films before trusting a reviewer, whether a movie critic or someone like myself, because people bring their own predisposed opinions of the subject matter, the actors, the studio, the property, whatever to them when they sit down to watch a movie.  For lack of a better statement, people should have the willpower to decide for themselves what they want to watch and not worry about what someone else thinks.

If you're not sure about laying down your money on a film and you wholly trust the opinion of someone else, do that, but I warn you that in the case of this film you will find that there hasn't been a time that people have had such polarized opinions about Green Lantern since Emerald Twilight was released.  There is literally outright harsh comments being made from critics as well as fans with unreasonable expectations on one side and people claiming it's the best film of the summer on the other.

A Corps of New Videos as the Media Flood Continues

We are on the home stretch and the publicity for the Green Lantern film has reached a fever pitch.  There are so many new featurettes and interviews playing on the Internet and on television that it's hard to keep them all straight.  Here are some of the highlights.

First off, Yahoo movies has a new featurette that includes comments from the cast and crew as well as Geoff Johns talking all about the scale and scope of the Green Lantern universe.

Dr. Waller Makes It Personal

Amanda Waller
If you've been following along, there's a great ARG going on for the Green Lantern film, starting with a group of astronomers tracking mysterious red lights in the sky and an advertisement in the Green Lantern comics.  That led to lobbying Amanda Waller to point the Spitzer telescope towards the lights, seen in the area of Cygnus.  People were then asked to analyze the data, isolating areas of interest and specifically the red lights and the newly observed rings of green light.  References on Waller's blog to various DC characters aside it was little more than a fun diversion....and then it changed.

After analyzing a number of the images some people were asked to submit their email address to Dr. Waller and a couple of them were later sent emails from Robert Frazer, one of her staff.  The email contained an audio file of a distress call coming from Fentara of Space Sector 2815 to Sinestro and listening to the audio allowed you to witness an attack on Fentara as he sought to defend himself against an unknown, frightening assailant.  The audio is spectacular and I present it again here if you haven't heard it yet.

A Question of Loyalty..a Battle for the Truth

Dr. Amanda Waller has sent some rather confrontational emails today to people who have been spreading the word about the audio of the alien attack leaked by one of her staffers.  This follows her attempts to discredit the man, Robert Frazer, by claiming mental infirmities and alcohol problems.  Miles, who has communicated with Waller as Bruce Wayne, shared the following email exchange with me:

Dr. Waller,

I read your last post on your blog. I have to say that I had total faith in you being a truthful person and wanting to uncover the truth, whatever that may be.

To quote you, "We got nothing. Nothing out of the ordinary."

Well, Dr. Waller....I know that your quote couldn't be farther from the truth!

I received a tweet from someone who will remain anonymous for their protection. The tweet consisted of an audio recording in the area of Cygnus where the images from the Spitzer telescope also originated. The audio is a distress call from a 'Sector' 2815 to an individual called 'Sinestro'. Now, Dr. Waller I'm not sure what or where sector 2815 is, but I will eventually know the facts. The distress call recording allows us to witness an attack and murder of a 'Green Lantern', 'Fentara Rrab'of Sector 2815 by an obvious ominous threat called 'Parallax'. I would hate to find out Amanda if you were holding back critical information and not sharing said information. It would be an unfortunate day if the next 'Sector'this entity attacks (which I'm assuming is 2814) is the Sector that holds our own Planet.... Earth!

Dr. Waller, let me be completely frank...I know this recording came from your own desk. A United States Government official holding this kind of information is way to dangerous in my book and I will do everything in my power to shed light on this coming obvious threat to our planet. I hope as an American and a member of the human race you do the same Dr. Waller. The fire of Truth always overcomes a Dark Knight Dr. Waller.

Sincerely,

BW

Amanda Waller Fires Back at Parallax Audio

You knew it was going to happen, and happen quickly.  After the "leak" of the audio of Parallax's attack on Fentara Rrab that hit the Internet yesterday, Amanda Waller has responded on her blog and her response was about was you'd expect - deny, deny, deny!  Meanwhile, Newton and District's site also contains the audio for anyone to listen to who missed it while offering their own opinions on the whole matter.

According to Waller Robert Frazer, the man who leaked the audio, was off his medication and concocted the audio to support his delusions and paranoia.  Since the audio leaked Robert went into hiding but ran away when someone knocked on his door - someone who he suspected, and probably rightfully so, to be sent by Waller to take care of him and prevent any more sharing of the information.

Waller of course uses references to H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds and that "if it's on the Internet if MUST be true" backpedaling and offers no real evidence as to discredit Frazer beyond the tactics used by today's politicians with only her word for us to accept.  Time will tell when or if Frazer will contact anyone again, but if you get an email from him, please contact me with the details so we can get the word out as the Green Lantern ARG experience continues.

Dr. Waller Says Nothing Was Found - Top Secret Audio Reveals Parallax is in Sector 2815!

Yesterday Dr. Waller posted on her blog the following message regarding the analysis of the images taken by the Spitzer telescope as a part of the Green Lantern movie viral campaign.  To quote her, "We got nothing. Nothing out of the ordinary."  Of course, the plot thickens as it always does when you deal with the Wall.

This morning I was contacted by Tony Castro from Laredo, Texas who tweeted me with an audio that he was sent from a man named "Robert".  Now Robert, while a common enough name, also coincides with a character from the ARG named Robert Frazer, an assistant to Dr. Waller.  The leaked audio from Dr. Waller's desk that Tony shared is very compelling.  Take a listen:

The audio comes from the area of Cygnus where the images from the Spitzer telescope also originated.  The audio is a distress call to Sinestro from the Green Lantern of sector 2815, who would be Fentara Rrab - none other than Arisia's father.  The distress call recording allows us to witness the coming of Parallax as Rrab is killed by the entity of fear just one sector away.  It's very compelling - and very, very cool!

Thanks to Tony for sharing this with me and thereby sharing it with everyone.  If anyone else gets a different recording sent to them - please share it with me so we can get this information out to everyone!  And let's start contacting Dr. Waller and confront her with our evidence - but don't rat Robert out!

Help Dr. Waller in the Updated Green Lantern Viral Campaign

As I said yesterday, the emails to Dr. Waller have worked in the Green Lantern movie viral campaign.  Today they turned the Spitzer telescope to highlight the red spots and they have not spotted a number of rings of green light in the sky as well - gee, what could that be!?  Both Dr. Waller's blog and the Newton Astronomers sites have been updated to reflect the new information and the whole game has shifted into second gear.

A third site that links us to the Spitzer Telescope data has shown up that is also owned by Warner Brothers.  Since the amount of data is overwhelming, Dr. Waller is asking us to visit the new site to note areas on the images from telescope that Dr. Waller's people should look at.  People can mark on the images using a graphic interface that provides a number of tools to annotate over the images.  The following video gives you and idea of how this functions.

So stop reading the blog and get over there to help out!

New Post Implies The Green Lantern Viral Campaign Is Moving Forward

The Newton Astronomers / Dr. Waller blog viral campaign I've been following for the past two weeks seems to moving forward some time over the next twenty four hours.  Dr. Waller's blog post of May 20th suggested that something would be happening in the next week, and this evening the following was posted by "Ellie" at the Newton Astronomers site:

If you look up towards the Milky Way tonight, Spitzer will be looking there too. We got an email just now from Dr Waller’s assistant saying he’s persuaded her and NASA to get us the time we asked for – it’ll happen in the early hours of the morning, our time. Brian and Ben are already in the pub, celebrating until it gets dark enough to go out to Wait’s Hill. Ivo is working out whether we’ll be able to see anything on our scope. I’m sure the answer is no, but it’s nice to look anyway.

So thank you Dr Waller, and thank you everyone who helped out on this – it was a brilliant community effort. Look up to the stars tonight and think about what we achieved together.

Add to this that today the Newton Astronomers full page add appeared in all three Green Lantern comics that were in comic book stores and the time is certainly right for this to kick into second gear!

More Emails from Amanda Waller Address Abin Sur's Distress Call, Supermax

Since the supposed Green Lantern viral has gone live, fans from all over the world have been flooding Dr. Waller's inbox with communications about Newton Astronomers request to use the Spitzer telescope to study some strange lights they have observed in the night sky.  Yesterday I posted some correspondence  between a Dr. Waller and a young woman playing the role of Lex Luthor and I earlier posted the emails that I sent and received to the same site.

We also shared some communications from Miles, a reader of my blog, who posed as Bruce Wayne.  Today Miles has more to offer us with a recent email he sent to Dr. Waller and the response he received from her.  Here's what he sent to her this time around.

Amanda Waller Responds to Lex Luthor in Green Lantern Viral Campaign

A Blog of Oa reader from Indonesia, Rianna Lauren, recently contacted Dr. Amanda Waller as part of the presumed Green Lantern viral campaign and she sent me the response she received from "The Wall" to share with everyone who's been following both Dr. Waller's Blog and the Newton Astronomers site.  Here's Rianna's well-crafted email that she sent, playing the role of Lex Luthor:

Dear Dr. Waller,
Please read through my entire message.  I thought twice, perhaps thrice, when I wanted to contact you, because I  needed to fully make sure that the anomaly these people saw is really there.  I wouldn't want to mail you for an utter nonsense. I had some people to check up on it, we put up a few telescopes and observed this for a few  consecutive nights, and I'd say what these people find is very much worth  investigating. It's very intriguing, even to me.

It may be more than just a simple anomaly in space, Dr. Waller, it may be something that's completely out of this world and can change the overall of mankind. This may be a great opportunity for a development in our field of astronomy.

But if that isn't convincing enough, think about the complete opposite possibility of the anomaly being something so positive to us. Maybe it's not all money. It may be something dangerous. Perhaps an intergalactic threat, as silly as it sounds. The anomaly is indeed very unusual and without YOUR support, we will never find out more about the secret and wide possibilities this anomaly holds.

I repeat, Dr. Waller, this is something that is very much worth checking.  It WILL be worth it. If you ever need my assistance, Lex Corp is ready to help.

Oh, and just so you know, I do have certain interests in the fields of  politics, so "President Luthor" might just be part of a new chapter in that history book of yours.

Thank you.
Lex Luthor

Amanda Waller Responds to Batman in Green Lantern Viral Campaign

Dr. Amanda Waller
I was contacted recently by Miles, a reader of this site, who shared with me a fun exchange he had with Dr. Amanda Waller via the  mail in form on Newton Astronomers.  You can also visit her blog at Dr. Waller dot net.  I thought the exchange was pretty interesting since this demonstrates that the responses being received by people are not necessarily canned emails even though many of the responses people have received carry the same tone.  Take a read:

Miles' email (Bruce Wayne) to Dr. Waller
On Sat, May 7, 2011 at 3:39 AM, Bruce Wayne wrote:

To whom it may concern,

I myself am skeptical but my interests have been peeked and would like to see further
information and observations. The Wayne foundation and Wayne Enterprises will be glad to help in anyway we can. You can contact Lucius Fox or myself directly through this email address above and we are in close contact with the Gotham Amateur Astronomy Foundation. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
BW

Her response:
On Thur, May 12, 2011 at 8:39AM, Amanda Waller

Bruce,

Of course I have heard of your company, and thank you for the offer. However I feel that it is unnecessary at the moment. I shall however keep it in mind should circumstances change.

Thank you for your interest,
AW

An Interesting Email Arrives From Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller
Last night I reported on a potential viral campaign or alternate reality game for the Green Lantern movie that seems to be playing out in England.  As part of my research I filled out a web form, playing along with the notion that something is going on out in deep space and asking Dr. Amanda Waller to use her influence to make the Spitzer Telescope available for research into the phenomenon.  Here's an excerpt from my submission and the response I received from Dr. Waller, note the Belle Reve reference.

"On 6 May 2011 02:43, Myron Rumsey wrote:

My family and I noticed a similar disturbance in the night sky with our telescope this previous Saturday evening. Perhaps there is something to what the Newton Astronomers Guild has seen that bears an official look see. "

"Good to hear some corroborating evidence. Some kids with a telescope and a dream is one thing, but lots of observations is the only thing that can give this the gravitas it would need to interest my NASA contacts.  Keep watching the skies and if you have any other astronomer friends, do encourage them to take a look and let me know what they see. I admit, I'm intrigued.

This could get very interesting between now and June 17th if enough people participate.  The main site for this is for the Newton and District Astronomers Guild.

What Are Bleeding Cool and Warner Brothers Up To?

A check on my Twitter feed this evening resulted in a really interesting mystery that seems to be playing out under our eyes.  In a tweet from @DC_Nation, one of DC Comics' Twitter accounts, they mentioned the British comic book website The Bleeding Cool and an advertisement that they found in their Green Lantern comics over in the United Kingdom.

"Is @ on to something? Green Lantern ad wants your help to find the truth? " - @DC_Nation tweet

Closeup of the full page ad in the British GL Comics
The link in the tweet takes you to a page on The Bleeding Cool showing a picture of a full page ad for the "Newton and District Astronomers Guild" that appeared in their Green Lantern comics.  Another image is shown of a part of the page blown up and you can see the group linked to two other fictitious organizations "Metropolis Astronomy Society" and "Gotham Amateur Astronomy Foundation".  The other tip off that this is DC Comics related is the plea in the ad to help the group persuade Dr. Amanda Waller to use her pull with NASA to get them access to the Spitzer Space Telescope.   Waller plays a role in the Green Lantern movie and this ad appears in the Green Lantern U.K. comics. Hmmm.....
