Ryan Reynolds Discusses Green Lantern - No Sequel News

MTV News was interviewing Ryan Reynolds about his new film Safe House when they asked him to reflect on the Green Lantern film.  His response was classy and demonstrates his approach to his work.  When asked about a sequel he had no more information than he did when the film came out.

Parallax / Legion Concept Art

One of the early conceptual designs
Early on in the development process of the Green Lantern film, the first draft of the script was rooted to the Emerald Dawn version of Hal Jordan's origin.  Like the comic book inspiration the character of Legion was one of the major threats that Hal faced in his first days as a Green Lantern in the film before the re-writing process changed the character to Parallax.

Like every other major film there is a lot of concept art generated to flesh out the character designs and help the filmmakers make creative decisions.  Artist Peter Rubin of Iron Rooster Studios was one artist who worked on the early designs for Legion / Parallax and he had several of his images on his site for anyone who'd like to see some of the options that Warner Brothers had to choose from.  It is interesting to see how close some of these drawings are compared to one that was leaked on the Internet that more closely resembles the entity from the comics.

Take the Kilowog Challenge and Score Some Goodies

Earlier this year the great folks at Mattel shipped some of their movie products when they kicked on their promotion of their Green Lantern movie line of toys.  We're happy to pass these goodies along in our first major contest, the Kilowog Challenge!

For anyone who listens to our podcast, The Podcast of Oa, we've had a fairly regular segment where my co-host, Bill Giancoli, poses a situation to me and I have a few seconds to decide what I would do if I were a Green Lantern in that predicament.  So for our contest we are turning our attention to you and what you would do in the following situation:

At the end of Green Lantern Corps #3 John Stewart was left stranded on the planet Xabas with a team of Green Lanterns surrounded by a battalion of the Keeper's warriors who we've dubbed "Will Ninjas".  The challenge: your job is to cover John's back - how do you protect him?

To enter simply add a comment to this post with what you'd do in this situation by 11:59 PM (U.S. Eastern Standard Time) on December 16th and include your email address in the post.  You can also post a comment on the contest's wall post on our Facebook group and our Google+ page, giving you three chances to win.  Bill and I will choose the response that we think is the best and contact the winner to arrange shipping.

What's up for grabs?  A prize package of four Green Lantern movie figures and three Green Lantern Battle Shifter figures.  Plus we'll throw in some other random Green Lantern surprises as well to sweeten the pot.

So put your thinking cap on and see if you're up to Kilowog's Challenge!

Updated Green Lantern Home Video Sales Numbers

The numbers for the United States sales of Green Lantern on the home video market continued their downward trend with the release of several Hollywood blockbusters, notably the final chapter of the Harry Potter film series.  So big was the impact of the release of the last film that for the week of November 13th that seven of the eight films and a gift set jumped into the top twenty list and the one film that didn't, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was number twenty-one.  On the blu-ray side of things five of the Harry Potter films and one gift set took six of the top ten places for the same week.

The impact of the Potter films may have actually helped Green Lantern's DVD sales with the title only dropping in sales by ten thousand copies from the week ending November 6th.  Blu-ray sales are a bit harder to gauge since the Potter onslaught knocked Green Lantern out of the top ten and the figures are not readily available.  Likewise we still have no numbers available for home rental and sales/rental information from the digital versions of the film.   They may be a sales boost due to a number of retailers offering Green Lantern in blu-ray as a Black Friday special, but with the price being dropped to $9.99 the bump may not be a big for the dollars sold as much as the number of units purchased.

Here are the sales numbers for the United States up to November 13th with some adjustments made to previous weeks.  The total sales dollars have nearly breached the $40 million without taking the unknown blu-ray sales figures into consideration.  Those numbers are still considerably lower than the sales of the other three major comic book films of the summer of 2011.

Sequel and Justice League Film Rumors Surface

With Warner Brothers not officially announcing anything regarding the future of their DC Entertainment projects beyond the next Batman and Superman films, rumors have surfaced that there are indeed plans for a shared DC film universe.  These plans, if the information is true,  includes a sequel to Green Lantern as well as a Justice League movie spearheaded not by Warner Brother, but by DC Entertainment itself.

Cosmic Book News is reporting that there are plans being put together for a Justice League movie for 2015 or 2016 and that the movie will be run by DC Entertainment and distributed by Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures with Chris Nolan's name being thrown around as the producer.   Geoff Johns will supposedly be acting as the Executive Producer and will provide the treatment for the movie to David Goyer who will be writing the script.

According to the report Warner Brothers also wants a sequel to Man of Steel before they Justice League, but are also looking at the Green Lantern sequel as a way to debut the shared universe, likely as a film loosely based on Sinestro going bad, but maybe with elements from the wildly popular Sinestro Corps War.  There obviously nothing official coming from Warner Brothers or DC Entertainment yet and the article admittedly says that they cannot confirm any of this information, so this could likely be nothing more than hopeful speculation.

One of the movie tie-in toys that peaked everyone's interest was the Ultimate Movie Masters Hal Jordan figure, and since the movie came out collectors have been wondering when, where and how much it would cost to get this twelve inch action figure that interacts with its own power ring.

Mattycollector.com recently put up a video with information on how fans will be able to get the figure starting on November 15th at noon Eastern time directly from their online store.  No word yet on the price from Mattel, but they have put together the following video to promote the sale.

Green Lantern 2 Fan Trailer

It only takes one great trailer to stir up interest in a film and get you all gung-ho to see it, or a lousy one to cross a movie off your must see list.  Anyone who felt like they didn't want to see a sequel to the Green Lantern movie should take a look at this fan made teaser trailer for the great potential a second movie has by picking up on the Sinestro credits sequence and running with it.  For me, all I can do it watch this, put my Blue Lantern ring on and hope the Powers That Be at Warner Brothers get the same goosebumps I do every time I a replay it.  Special thanks to Blog of Oa reader Diogo Oliveira for sharing it with us on the new Blog of Oa facebook page.

Home Video Sales Begin to Tumble

As you'd expect with any home video release, sales numbers will be highest in the first week and then begin to drop off.  In Green Lantern's case the drop between the week ending October 16th and the 23rd represented a twenty three percent drop in the number of units and a thirty percent drop in sales dollars.  The film continues to perform stronger on the Blu-ray format but the gap between the high definition disc sales and DVD closed considerably.

For the week ending October 30th the release of Captain America and Winnie the Pooh and the continued strong performance of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film had a profound affect on Green Lantern's performance with Green Lantern dropping from the second place position it held for the past two weeks, dropping to sixth place in blu-ray sales.  While numbers are still not readily available for digital sales, rentals, or the actual numbers from the October 24-30 week, here are the numbers for Green Lantern's sales through October 23, 2011 for the DVD and blu-ray releases.

Green Lantern physical media sales numbers
While the percentage of decline is not drastic, if you were assume that the sales would continue to decline at the same rate and not experience any kind of sales bump during the holiday shopping season you could predict the final 2011 sales figures to total about $53 million in the United States.  This is a liberal sales number because it is based on a static rate of decrease and in reality sales tend to drop off at an increasing rate as new titles enter the market and advertising campaign end.  Realistically that number will be considerably lower.  As a bit of perspective Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon sold about that many copies in its first four weeks of release and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has topped that sales figure in its first two weeks.

The bigger picture is that the worldwide box office results of about $220 million and the generous predication of home video sales brings totals about $270 million.  The unknown foreign home video sales, digital and rental numbers worldwide and income generated from licensing the film should bring that number up much higher, but understanding that the film cost $200 million to produce and at least another $100 million in promotional expenses and the sobering conclusion is that the film will end up making little if any profit.  This will make the decision to move forward with a sequel a bit harder to make considering Warner Brothers hopes of mining the DC library for tent pole films to make up for the end of the Harry Potter series despite comments from Jeff Robinov and Geoff Johns that have offered hope for a second film.

Green Lantern Continues to Do Well On Home Video

Green Lantern continues to do well on the United States home video market, maintaining the number two spot on the overall Blu-ray sales charts for the week ending on October 23rd behind the first week release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  Fifty-six percent of the home video sales of Green Lantern that week came from the Blu-ray format.

U.S. Domestic sales number for the week of October 16th show that Green Lantern sold 315,672 copies on the DVD format and 494,057 copies on Blu-ray, with a total sales volume of $16,728,728.00 for the three days the film was available for purchase.  Digital sales numbers have not been revealed yet, but the film has done well so far domestically, although a strong release calendar of home video releases over the next several weeks will likely see the sales number decline.  There is no word yet on a potential sequel getting the green light and it could be that Warner Brothers is waiting to see how the video market affects the film's overall financial performance before making a decision.

More Goodies from the Noble Collection

Green Lantern Green Spinning Ring
The Noble Collection has continued to increase the size of their Green Lantern movie collection, and recently they added four more new products to their line including three more rings and a pendant.  Like many of the items in the collection these new items are able to be pre-ordered with a shipping date of December 1st.

At $45 is another spinning ring, very similar to the ring that was added about a week ago, only this ring has the Green Lantern insignia in sterling silver on a green rotating band rather than the black on silver the original offering had.   This ring is available in whole ring sizes from 8-12.

Green Lantern Steel Emblem Ring
The Steel Emblem Ring offers a familiar variation to the Green Lantern power ring, featuring the insignia in a bit larger scale on a stainless steel band.  The ring, also in whole sizes from 8-12, sells for $39.

Also selling for $39 and being offered in whole sizes 8-12 is the Green Lantern Green Signet Ring in stainless steel.  This ring features the logo in green on silver traditionally styled signet ring.

Rounding out the new additions is a black stainless steel emblem pendant on a chain, which is selling for $35.

Green Lantern Tops US DVD Sales Charts

Green Lantern might have been a box office disappointment, but the film did quite well on the U.S. home video sales charts.  For home video sales for the week ending October 16th Green Lantern was the top selling DVD and the second most selling Blu-ray, narrowly behind the mega-selling Disney movie, The Lion King.  The sales numbers come from the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Green Lantern's results are great considering the movie did not go on sale until October 14th meaning it's performance was based on three days of sales.  While this is definitely good news the initial sales of any major film is usually much higher during the first week due to people pre-ordering and sales stimulated by advertising.  What will be important for Warner Brothers is how the film performs over the coming weeks and the sales of the home video may be one of  determining factors in their decision on whether or not to proceed with a sequel.

Video rental and digital sales rankings and actual sales numbers have not yet become available.

Geoff Johns Comments on GL Film and More at NYCC

DC Comics held a Green Lantern panel featuring Peter Tomasi, Geoff Johns and Tony Bedard this evening at the New York Comic Con and the trio revealed several tidbits about the coming months in the Green Lantern family of books, and Geoff Johns make some comments about the Green Lantern movie and a potential sequel.

With regard to the main Green Lantern title, writer Geoff Johns talked about the second arc of the book being "The Secret of the Indigo Tribe".  In an upcoming issue Sinestro will be showing Hal Jordan how to do something with the power ring that no Green Lantern has ever done before, and Johns said that the Sinestro Corps would deal with that little problem of being named after someone who's not their leader anymore.  Larfleeze will be getting another special after last year's successful Christmas issue did so well, and despite wanting to put a moratorium on the character he will be appearing in issue 4 of Green Lantern: New Guardians - and he'll also appear in the Green Lantern Animated Series.

Switching hats a moment to his Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment role, Johns mentioned that he's working with the Robot Chicken crew to put together a DC Special in similar vein to the show's popular Star Wars trilogy of specials. Johns has worked on the Cartoon Network show for several seasons and a crossover is no surprise considering the network's ties to DC.  When asked about the movie Johns commented that he loved seeing the characters brought to life and getting exposure to more people that get reached by the comics medium, and said that "I hope to get the character gets another film.  It will be in live action again, I guarantee it.".

Peter Tomasi
When a fan asked about the possibility of seeing Sodam Yat, Green Lantern Corps writer Peter Tomasi said that they as a creative team have taken the character off the shelf for the immediate future.  Likewise, G'Nort will not be seen anytime soon.

Tony Bedard said that he is considering giving Kyle Rayner a new love interest and when asked about the Green Lantern timeline, specifically about the length of time that Kyle was Green Lantern, Bedard indicated that Emerald Twilight took place two years before the current point in time.  While the New Guardians title will feature all the various facets of the emotional spectrum, the writing team indicated that we wouldn't be seeing the White Entity appear there.

Tomasi revealed that the antagonists in the Green Lantern Corps title were called the Keepers, the name derived from their past role of being the keepers of the Power Batteries.  The cover to Green Lantern issue #5 was also revealed during the panel.

Noble Collection Doubles Their Offerings

Ten days ago I posted an entry about the Noble Collection and their three offerings for the Green Lantern items, lamenting in particular the absence of a high quality, wearable power ring.  Some time since then they have doubled the size of their Green Lantern collection to six items, and this time they've got what I've been waiting for.

At $145 the Noble Collection is offering a sterling silver ring that will be available in whole sizes from 8-12.  The ring is not movie authentic featuring a gem stone in the center and a band which narrows towards the back.  The sterling silver ring can be pre-ordered but will not ship until December.

The Green Lantern Prop Ring also doesn't ship until December and comes enclosed in a Green Lantern branded display chamber.  The prop ring retails for $35 and appears to be a bit bigger and chunkier that the sterling silver ring.  While their description says that the prop ring is a size 11 the Noble Collection site does not say whether or not the ring can be removed from the display unit, but the image gives the impression that it is. Given the price point, however, I doubt that this version is designed to be worn as much as it is to be displayed.

The third and final new item is the Green Lantern Spinning Ring.  The spinning ring comes in whole sizes from 8-12 and is made from sterling silver.  Also shipping in December, this $45 dollar ring features a band of Green Lantern logos which presumably spin around the wearer's finger.
