First Look at JLA Doom's Star Sapphire

One of several images posted by #1 Nightwing Fan from the Justice League: Doom preview on the Batman: Year One DVD reveals the Star Sapphire character design that will be seen in the animated film.  Olivia D'Abo, who provided the voice of Queen Aga'po in the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of the Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters video game, will reprise the voice acting role for Carol Ferris.  D'Abo did the voice of Carol Ferris in the first Green Lantern animated feature, Green Lantern: First Flight and the few times Star Sapphire appeared in the Justice League animated series.  As you can see from the image, producer Bruce Timm is going with the modern version of Star Sapphire's uniform, which is sure to raise a few eyebrows for those who don't read the comics.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Review

Back in the 1990's there was a Green Lantern video game in development for the Sega Genesis which never saw the light of day.  Since then we've seen GL in other games such as Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, Justice League Heroes and DC Universe Online.  , but this past week saw the release of Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters for all of the current generation of game consoles plus the Nintendo 3DS.  This review pertains to the Xbox 360 version of the game but my comments will no doubt apply to the Playstation 3 version as well.  The Nintendo versions of Rise of the Manhunters was developed by a different studio and their version of the game is completely different than this one.

The Xbox and Playstation versions of the game were developed by Double Helix Games, a studio that doesn't exactly have the best record out there, but it seems that this game is definitely one that they can be proud of despite some flaws because Rise of the Manhunters is a lot of fun to play with great visuals and a fun combat system.  However the shortcomings in the game keep it in the category of good games that could have been great.  No, this isn't as bad as Iron Man 2 or the new Thor game, but it's also certainly no Batman: Arkham Asylum, either.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Nintendo 3DS Trailer, Renders Released

Warner Brothers Interactive released some character renders and a promotional trailer for the Nintendo 3DS version of Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters which releases simultaneously on all major gaming platforms on June 7th.  While the games shares the same title, the Nintendo versions of the game have been developed by different studios and the game play will be different.  While most handheld games have tended to by skimpy in terms of the visual quality of the graphics, the newly released renders show off the high quality that the new Nintendo handheld is capable of.

Will Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Escape the Movie Game Curse

For some reason video games tied to superhero films always end up more like Iron Man 2 than Batman: Arkham Asylum.  Yeah, I know the Batman games doesn't go with a movie and that's the point, there hasn't been a really good movie tie in game, period.  The Wolverine game was okay in some respects but it was mediocre at best.  Double Helix is hard at work finishing Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters and one of the staff at G4 got a hands on preview which instills hope that this game might just break the movie video game curse.

Double Helix is only developing the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, so if you're a Nintendo fan realize that the version of the game for the Wii, DS and 3DS will not only look different, but will likely play different since they are being developed by a different studio, Griptonite Games.  The story for the game is written by Marv Wolfman and Ryan Reynolds is providing the voice of Hal Jordan.  From this preview the game seems to be in the God of War vein - which could be a very good thing, although I'll be honest in saying that I wish it was more like Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Update from WonderCon

The XBOX-360 and Playstation 3 versions of Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters video game had a presence at WonderCon this weekend and provided fans with their first chance to play parts of the game.  IGN was on hand to play the game and provided some initial reactions and information about the gameplay.  One positive comment from them is that they got a pretty positive feeling about the game, going so far as to say it may not be just another crummy movie tie-in game.

As IGN reports, Rise of the Manhunters is a third person adventure game that takes place in the movie's universe, but the plot is entirely original and the game almost serves as a sequel of sorts to the film and even stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Hal Jordan.  There is a cooperative mode where a friend can join in playing as Sinestro and battling alongside Hal in the single player campaign.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Goes 3D

The upcoming movie tie-in game, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, is being released in 3D on the Xbox-360 and the Playstation 3 in addition to being Warner Brothers first Nintendo 3DS game.  Ryan Reynolds does the voiceover work for Hal Jordan in the game which is scheduled to be released on June 7th, 2011.  Gamers who have a 3D HDTV will be able to use the active shutter glasses that work with their television, while those who don't have a 3D television will be able to have a 3D experience by using the game's anaglyphic 3D technology and wearing the 3D glasses that will be available for the video game.  The cover of the game has also changed to show Hal Jordan on the cover.  The Nintendo versions will have a more animated look to the character design and that is reflected in a more cartoon looking version of the cover for their systems.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is being developed for the Nintendo DS, 3DS and Wii by Gryptonite Studios, while Double Helix Games is handling the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 versions.  Since the is being developed by two different studios it's likely the gameplay will be very different.

First Images from Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Emerge

There has been very little information available about the upcoming Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters video game since the initial announcement and press release from game developer Double Helix.  We do know the game will appear on multiple platforms on June 1st and that there will be a unique combo system allowing for the combination of a number of the game's hard light constructs.  There will also be the opportunity to play cooperatively with a friend to battle the alien hordes of enemies facing our heroes.

Russian gaming site, Absolute Games, has somehow managed to come across a couple of screen captures from the game, one featuring Hal Jordan battling what appears to be Zamoran warriors complete with crystalline sapphire weapons.  The other shot may be a variation on the Manhunter design or perhaps a boss character from the game.

Green Lantern Faces the Manhunters on a Gaming Console Near You

Xbox 360 Cover Art

In July Warner Brothers Interactive announced that video game studio Double Helix will be making the first Green Lantern video game, "Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters" to tie into the release of next summer's movie.  Little in the way of detail has been released, however the game has shown up for preorder on Amazon and Gamestop with both sites showing a June 1, 2011 release date and some of the game's details.  I'm not so sure that's a firm date since it is a Wednesday and most games are released on Tuesdays, but there have been exceptions and this game could certainly be one of them.

Ryan Reynolds will be providing the voice of Hal Jordan for the game, which will pit you as Hal Jordan facing the menace of the Manhunters following the events of the movie.  The game is set to release on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS gaming platforms.
