CNN Interviews Dan DiDio and Jim Lee

CNN has a brief interview about the relaunch of the DC Universe.  While it's not very long, it's good to see DC getting some mainstream press coverage.

Is A New Multi-Lantern Series Part of DC's Reboot?

Click for a much larger version of the new JLA

DC's shell-shocking announcement of a complete reboot of their comic universe took most of us by surprise, except for Rich Johnston's U.K. comics website The Bleeding Cool, which seems to have gotten a lot of information about what's coming up for the new DCU.  I think that the site may have struck up a relationship of sorts with DC Entertainment in light of the Green Lantern ARG that's been going on for several weeks now.

From the information that Rich Johnston has been publishing on his site, one article in particular is of interest to Green Lantern fans.  If correct then one of the fifty two titles to be launched in September is a multi-color lantern team book which stars a member of each one of the Corps....plus a Black Lantern.  Rich also says that Tyler Kirkham is involved in the new book.  With about three quarters of the creative teams shifting it's hard to say if Kirkham will still involved with The Green Lantern Corps title, if the title continues to exist after August.  Knowing that Peter Milligan was working on a Red Lantern series I think that this book may be the new book Johnston is talking about and DC was being untruthful about what the series really was about.

With so little information available yet, it's hard to say how this bold new direction for DC Comics will affect the Green Lantern universe knowing that it is one of their most successful, if not the most successful family of books.  We can presume that Hal Jordan will be one of the stars of the new Geoff Johns/Jim Lee run of the Justice League according to the new artwork that accompanied the big announcement yesterday, and that he is sporting a slightly modified look to the uniform.  I tweeted Lee yesterday about the ring since it wasn't apparent which hand it is on and the image implied the left by the glow around Hal's left hand and the construct appearing there, but I haven't gotten a reply to that yet.

We know that Geoff Johns will be staying on the Green Lantern title and that it's not likely that events in his run will remain part of the new DC universe.  I'm personally glad to hear that since it would have made the rest of the War of the Green Lanterns seem pointless if it were to be forgotten about two months after it concluded.  There seems to be some concern about Kyle Rayner disappearing, but I don't think there's anything for his fans to worry about given that the Green Lantern universe seems the most likely to be unchanged by these new events.

There will be plenty of new information to think about over the next two months prior to the launch of the new DCU.  While I think this is a huge risk for DC, there's a part of me that's actually excited to see what's going to happen.

**Update - Jim Lee did some looking to see what happened with Hal's ring in the Justice League image and after some looking discovered it was on the original pencil sketches.  The rind was removed in error during the inking process.  See the original sketch image below which you can see in more detail if you click on the image.

Green Lantern Movie Will Connect to DCU Online Game

One of the benefits of the formation of DC Entertainment and having some coordinated planning with all the different projects using DC's characters is the ability to have some connective tissue between those projects.  I've already lamented the lack of Green Lantern as a mentor and power set in the just released DC Universe Online game for the PC and the Playstation 3, but according to DC Co-Publisher and the executive creative director of the game Jim Lee, the new superhero MMO will feature Green Lantern via an expansion pack to leverage the excitement generated from the movie.

In an interview with the The Hollywood Reporter, Lee said:

"Fortunately, the Green Lantern that debuts in the feature film this June is based heavily upon the same core canon found in the pages of the comics," Lee said. "In that sense, Green Lantern is Green Lantern, so of course, future expansions of DCUO will want to tap into the same well of excitement and passion and awareness that's generated by such big blockbuster motion pictures.

"Themes of intergalactic heroism, conquering one's fears and making the galaxy a more just place translate well into both film and games," Lee said. "Fans just want great content, whether it be a hit movie or an awesome game. It's less important to have a game tied into a hit movie than it is to make the game fantastic on its own merits."

While the game and the expansions are more directly tied to the comic book universe, there will be some themes from other DCU based media will resonate in the game as well.  Events such as Blackest Night would be a great expansion for Halloween time, and there are a number of major events from DC's 75 year history that would make great player experiences in an MMO.  As a huge DC fan and a gamer I am really looking forward to spending a lot of time immersed in this new online universe and I am chomping at the bit to see how the games designers will incorporate the Green Lantern mythos into DC Universe Online - as long as I get to wear a power ring!
