Take the Kilowog Challenge and Score Some Goodies

Earlier this year the great folks at Mattel shipped some of their movie products when they kicked on their promotion of their Green Lantern movie line of toys.  We're happy to pass these goodies along in our first major contest, the Kilowog Challenge!

For anyone who listens to our podcast, The Podcast of Oa, we've had a fairly regular segment where my co-host, Bill Giancoli, poses a situation to me and I have a few seconds to decide what I would do if I were a Green Lantern in that predicament.  So for our contest we are turning our attention to you and what you would do in the following situation:

At the end of Green Lantern Corps #3 John Stewart was left stranded on the planet Xabas with a team of Green Lanterns surrounded by a battalion of the Keeper's warriors who we've dubbed "Will Ninjas".  The challenge: your job is to cover John's back - how do you protect him?

To enter simply add a comment to this post with what you'd do in this situation by 11:59 PM (U.S. Eastern Standard Time) on December 16th and include your email address in the post.  You can also post a comment on the contest's wall post on our Facebook group and our Google+ page, giving you three chances to win.  Bill and I will choose the response that we think is the best and contact the winner to arrange shipping.

What's up for grabs?  A prize package of four Green Lantern movie figures and three Green Lantern Battle Shifter figures.  Plus we'll throw in some other random Green Lantern surprises as well to sweeten the pot.

So put your thinking cap on and see if you're up to Kilowog's Challenge!

When DC Entertainment formed last year there were rumors circulating that the DC Direct branch would be closing down with the large scale licensing deal signed with Mattel.  At the San Diego Comic Con over the weekend a number of new figures were on display including the DCnU Justice League figures featuring the Jim Lee revamps of many of the costumes.  Included in the batch was a Hal Jordan Green Lantern figure.

Green Lantern Movie Review

With my self-imposed exile from the site over and some time to digest and process the film I'm ready to return here to share with you my thoughts about the Green Lantern film.  I want to preface this with a little editorial and just say something right up front before diving into this review.

I really believe that people should make up their own minds about films before trusting a reviewer, whether a movie critic or someone like myself, because people bring their own predisposed opinions of the subject matter, the actors, the studio, the property, whatever to them when they sit down to watch a movie.  For lack of a better statement, people should have the willpower to decide for themselves what they want to watch and not worry about what someone else thinks.

If you're not sure about laying down your money on a film and you wholly trust the opinion of someone else, do that, but I warn you that in the case of this film you will find that there hasn't been a time that people have had such polarized opinions about Green Lantern since Emerald Twilight was released.  There is literally outright harsh comments being made from critics as well as fans with unreasonable expectations on one side and people claiming it's the best film of the summer on the other.

Mattel's licensing for the Green Lantern movie extends beyond the action figures and role-playing toys that are appearing on toy shelves all across the country.  Hot Wheels is also jumping on the emerald bandwagon with a line of Green Lantern themed toys including race tracks, radio controlled cars and a small version of the 1971 Dodge Challenger that Hal Jordan drives in the movie.  They've also devoted a portion of their website to Green Lantern with games and information about their product line.  Here's an ad showing some of the products in the Green Lantern Hot Wheels product selection; hover over the image to zoom in.

Green Lantern Colossal Cannon Review

I was approached by Mattel a while ago about reviewing some of their products that we will see on store shelves soon to tie in with the Green Lantern movie.  This week received a couple of boxes from Mattel and one of the products was the Green Lantern Colossal Cannon disk shooter.  Here is my video overview of the toy and clicking the "Read More" button will reveal some scans of the DEO Classified documents booklet that was included with it.

I will have a review of the other products I received (three of the Battle Shifters figures) some time this next week once I've finished shooting and editing the video portion.  Many thanks to Mattel for giving me the opportunity to preview and showcase some of their product line.

The Toys R Us Green Lantern Saga Continues...Updated

Delayed...again

Many other Green Lantern fans and I have been on a unique journey together for the past couple of months.  The week after Christmas retailer Toys R Us announced that they were pre-ordering a special Green Lantern early bird action figure and the road from those days to the final release of the figure have been a bumpy one - and it's taken yet another detour.

Shortly after the figure was offered is disappeared from the Toys R Us website, and people received emails notifying them that this limited figure of a production run of 2814 was delayed.  Toys R Us, rather than just keep those orders on hold, cancelled all of them only to put the figures back on sale a day or two later.  Once again the figure was delayed and orders were cancelled for a second time.

For a third time now the figure was made available with a revised shipping date of March 4th.  That date came and went and over the past week customers have received emails that explained that the figure was delayed yet again, but that orders were not cancelled, that is as long as the figure is released by April 3rd.  Otherwise not only will all the orders be cancelled, but the figure's release will no longer be an "early bird" offer but one that sits alongside every other Green Lantern action figure.

**Update - Production issues have been resolved on this figure and Toy's R Us has them in stock at their warehouses.  Many fans received an email today from Toy's R Us notifying them that the Early Bird figures are shipping today with an arrival date of March 22nd through the 25th.

Since ceasing publication Wizard magazine has relaunched as an all digital publication with the second issue just hitting the web.  One of the features it this issue highlights a number of the Green Lantern movie figures and the images continue to show how the movies design artists are re-imagining a number of the classic members of the Green Lantern Corps.  Some of the designs, like Isamot Kol, look really great, while others are real departures from how fans have come to know them.

More footage has hit the Internet from the New York Toy Fair, this time video footage of a demonstration of the twelve inch Movie Masters Green Lantern figure from Mattel.  This deluxe figure comes with a ring which activates lights and sounds on the figure as the proximity of the ring causes Hal's uniform to come to life.  The figure also includes the voice of Ryan Reynolds speaking the Green Lantern oath and comes with a Green Logo base.

Mattel Green Lantern Sets Reveal Parallax

More Mattel Green Lantern news this evening in the form of an over-sized version of Kilowog and some sets of the 3.75" inch figures that include some characters not found elsewhere in the line.  One set, called "The Final Showdown" features a glimpse at what may be the final design of Parallax for the film.  If so, the film version of the Entity of Fear has a slightly humanoid head shape, presumably to allow for the animation of character when he communicates to look better.

Mattel's Green Lantern Movie Masters Lineup

The pictures from this year's New York Toy Fair continue to make their way to the Internet as the event comes to a close.  Mattel had a major presence at this year's show thanks in part to the product line they have coming out for the upcoming Green Lantern movie.  Besides the 3.75" figures in their basic line, Mattel has a six inch line of "Movie Masters" figures that remain true to the movie designs of the characters.  This twelve figure series include a collect and connect fourteen inch long figure of Parallax, with each figure costing between $15 and $17.  Toys R Us will also have some exclusive two packs of the Movie Masters figures and may be the only way to get Abin Sur and Tomar-Re in their six inch versions as they were not shown individually packaged.  The six inch figures also have a bigger brother with a twelve inch Hal Jordan figure with an interactive ring and base which will produce light and sound when the ring comes into proximity.
