Green Lantern 101 - Guy Gardner

People either love Guy Gardner or hate him, but as the second Green Lantern of Earth the outspoken red head has a long and storied history dating back to 1968.  Like Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner was created by legendary comic book creators John Broome and Gil Kane, however many fans know very little about the history of the man who could have been chosen over Hal and the history that has shaped him into the character we love and hate today.

New Green Lantern Items Seen at Toy Fair

The annual New York Toy Fair was recently held and while there weren't nearly as many Green Lantern items on display as last year there was still a smattering of items to be seen.  Surprisingly the only merchandise on display in support of the Green Lantern animated series was found in a set of maquettes that had already been shown before.  Here are the highlights found around the net from those who were able to attend.

Green Lantern 101 - Salaak

The character of Salaak has been present in the Green Lantern mythology for over the last thirty years and like many characters has seen his story change and his role within the Green Lantern Corps change over time.  Originally created as an antagonist for Hal Jordan within the Corps, Salaak became one of the most revered and important members, becoming the second in command of the Corps.

Origins -
Green Lantern v.2  #149
Salaak first appeared in Green Lantern #149 (Volume 2) in 1982 as a creation of Marv Wolfman and Joe Staton.  He was a foil within the Green Lantern Corps for Hal Jordan and it's there that his characteristic pessimism and gruff exterior began.  His role was a minor one and his questioning of Hal's actions served as a catalyst for Arisia's already blooming infatuation with the Earth man.  His significance within the Corps was so minor in those days that it wasn't uncommon to see his name spelled incorrectly as Sallak or Salakk and often more than one variation in any given issue.  In fact for year's his name was spelled Salakk almost all of the time and it even appeared that way when the Corps was relaunched during the "Green Lantern Corps: Recharge" mini-series.  As he became a more regularly used character he put aside his dislike for Hal Jordan after fighting alongside him against many threats to galactic peace.

Green Lantern v.2 #215
Crisis and the Destruction of the Corps -
During the Crisis on Infinite Earths Salaak played a role in protecting several sectors for the Green Lantern Corps but he emerged from the experience with an even blearier outlook on life.  Shortly after the Crisis the Guardians left the universe with their former partners, the Zamarons, who had gone on to create the Star Sapphires after they had parted with their mates eons before.

Salaak became one of a contingent of Green Lanterns based on Earth in the wake of the departure of the Guardians and his loneliness led to a close friendship with Ch'p, the squirrel-like Green Lantern of Sector 1014.  But at one point Salaak disappeared into the future to take on the guise of Pol Manning as a replacement for Hal Jordan.

Pol Manning was the Solar Director in the 57th Century, and to make a convoluted story easier to follow, he needed to be replaced for the stability of the future.  Previously the other leaders used time travel to pluck an exceptional person from Earth's past, Hal Jordan, mind controlled him and disguised him as their own missing leader.  Now the effects of sending the human back and forth through time caused damage to him and the leaders of the 57th Century needed a new Pol Manning - and Salaak was the one chosen.

Eventually Salaak's mind is freed but he chooses to remain in the future married to his human wife.  However one day Salaak noticed that there were no Green Lanterns in his time and upon venturing to Oa he shockingly learned that the Corps had been dismantled when the central power battery was destroyed in the 20th Century.  Leaving his wife behind Salaak arrives back in the present day too late, the Green Lanterns have sentenced Sinestro to death and the events that unfold lead to the battery's destruction.  With that Salaak and almost all of the Green Lantern Corp remain powerless and he joined his friend Ch'p to live out the rest of his days as his advisor in the last issue of volume two of Green Lantern, issue 224, which had been named The Green Lantern Corps since issue 201.

The Return of  Corps and the Rise of Parallax -
Both Ch'p and Salaak rejoined the Corps when is was reformed, however Salaak lost his best friend when the small being was hit by a yellow tractor trailer on the Mosaic World (Green Lantern: Mosaic #2).  While Salaak remained in the Corps he again became more of a background character and when Hal Jordan entered the central power battery on Oa during "Emerald Twilight" Salaak become one of the many Green Lanterns left without a power ring.  Salaak and a number of other former Green Lanterns were captured and later freed by Guy Gardner, whose newly discovered alien heritage granted him new abilities (Guy Gardner: Warrior #35).

The Keeper of the Book and Clarissi of the Corps -
Following the defeat of Parallax the Green Lantern Corps is again reactivated and this time Salaak finds himself in a far greater role serving the Guardians as their administrative liaison and the Keeper of the Book of Oa (Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1).  While this new role keeps Salaak on Oa he has found himself taking action in major events like the Sinestro Corp Wars and Blackest Night when he took command of the Green Lantern Corps as the Clarissi, stopping the Alpha Lanterns from assuming control when the Guardians became incapacitated.

While Salaak sometimes disagrees with some of the Guardians' decisions, particularly when they have rewritten the Book of Oa, he always maintains his composure and never oversteps his position even when the Guardians have withheld key information from him.  Only time will tell if Salaak will continue to be passive when dealing with the decision making of the Guardians in light of their recent statements regarding the Corps and the coming of the Third Army.

Parallax / Legion Concept Art

One of the early conceptual designs
Early on in the development process of the Green Lantern film, the first draft of the script was rooted to the Emerald Dawn version of Hal Jordan's origin.  Like the comic book inspiration the character of Legion was one of the major threats that Hal faced in his first days as a Green Lantern in the film before the re-writing process changed the character to Parallax.

Like every other major film there is a lot of concept art generated to flesh out the character designs and help the filmmakers make creative decisions.  Artist Peter Rubin of Iron Rooster Studios was one artist who worked on the early designs for Legion / Parallax and he had several of his images on his site for anyone who'd like to see some of the options that Warner Brothers had to choose from.  It is interesting to see how close some of these drawings are compared to one that was leaked on the Internet that more closely resembles the entity from the comics.

Stand Up to Your Fears at Six Flags

My son's friend Kurt, my son Ryan, my wife Debe and I stand up to our fear at Six Flags Great Adventure
A couple of weeks ago I made a trip to the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in Jackson, New Jersey with my wife, my son and his best friend with the mission to ride the new Green Lantern "Stand Up to Your Fear" roller coaster.  The ride features the novelty of riding it from a standing position during all five of its inversions, reaching a top speed of 63 mph and a maximum height of 154 feet.  While you're experiencing the ride from a standing position, rest assured that you are not going to fall if your legs buckle since there is a mini bicycle seat under your body that gives you a bit of support in addition to the brace that gets lowered over your head and locked down.

I've always been a coaster enthusiast, but since having major back surgery about twenty years ago and being told by my doctor not to ride coasters anymore I haven't ridden very many.  But, come one, this is a Green Lantern roller coaster and I wasn't about to let a bad back get in the way of my enjoyment!  The ride was quite a thrill and I left the ride with my legs a little wobbly for a few minutes, although my wife, who isn't a coaster fan, was in serious need of some Dramamine to get through the rest of the evening!  I don't think it helped too much that I insisted on riding in the front row!  There are a lot of lateral g-forces at play and the ride lasted more than two minutes so you really get a lot of thrill in your thrill ride.

What really made me geek out about the ride was the attention to detail put into designing the panels that laid out the Green Lantern story for people waiting to get on the ride, the replica of Hal Jordan's (complete with the "Highball" call sign and a nice touch of using the sector number on the tail), and the use of a Ferris aircraft hangar design for the final que area, complete with the "Where Courage Takes Flight" slogan.  There was also a Green Lantern kiosk near the exit of the ride where there were lots of shirts and collectible items.

The idea behind the ride, which you understand if you read the story panels during your wait, is that Parallax has come to Earth and you must stand up to your fear to help Green Lantern defeat the entity.  Ride up the first lift hill you may hear the Green Lantern oath depending on whether or not the ride operator plays it during your ascent.  As your round the corner of the lift hill and prepare to make the first drop you see a mock up of Parallax with mist spraying down on the track from under his face and his outstretched arms as he poises to attack.  As you drop down you pass under Parallax's arms and into a high loop which is painted yellow to symbolize Parallax's tail.  The ride continues through barrel rolls and a pretzel as you fly around the track before returning to the hangar to exit the ride.

No you get to stare down Parallax!
The pictures below show a lot of the detail work that Six Flags put into the ride and I've included a ride video from YouTube so you can get an idea of what it was like, although the video was shot before the Parallax display was added to it.  I can't recommend the ride and the park enough with the number of DC Comics related rides - there are two Batman coasters and a Superman coaster as well - plus the Hall of Justice gift shop, the mock up of the Batmobile and the costumed superheroes found throughout the park.

The entry to the Green Lantern coaster - the Lantern lights up!
The Green Lantern story plays out on this and the following panels as you wait to face the ultimate evil.

Hal's jet - note the easter egg of sorts on the tail.
They even included Hal's call sign!

Green Lantern Movie Review

With my self-imposed exile from the site over and some time to digest and process the film I'm ready to return here to share with you my thoughts about the Green Lantern film.  I want to preface this with a little editorial and just say something right up front before diving into this review.

I really believe that people should make up their own minds about films before trusting a reviewer, whether a movie critic or someone like myself, because people bring their own predisposed opinions of the subject matter, the actors, the studio, the property, whatever to them when they sit down to watch a movie.  For lack of a better statement, people should have the willpower to decide for themselves what they want to watch and not worry about what someone else thinks.

If you're not sure about laying down your money on a film and you wholly trust the opinion of someone else, do that, but I warn you that in the case of this film you will find that there hasn't been a time that people have had such polarized opinions about Green Lantern since Emerald Twilight was released.  There is literally outright harsh comments being made from critics as well as fans with unreasonable expectations on one side and people claiming it's the best film of the summer on the other.

Green Lantern Press Conference Transcript

SuperHeroHype was present at the recent press conference where most of the cast and crew were assembled to take questions about the Green Lantern movie as we enter the final week before release.  The conversation covered a wide range of topics from Peter Sarsgaard's makeup to the subject of sequels to comparisons to Batman and Superman.  Here's the text from the entire press conference courtesy of SuperHeroHype.

Q: Martin, you brought James Bond back twice. You brought Zorro to modern screens and now you're launching this DC Comic book franchise. What's ideal for you in creating and launching new things and what things will be on the DVD?

Director Martin Campbell
Martin Campbell: Well, I'm cheap. No, no. The thing is that I've never done a comic book movie before. Superheroes, I guess, yes. Bond is a kind of a form of a superhero and Zorro, obviously, but I've never done a superhero movie before. I wasn't even versed in the comic when it came through the door. Once having read them and so forth, it just sort of fascinated me, the whole world of Green Lantern – going to another planet, going to the center of the universe. So that's really why I did it. What is it about me? These things aren't about me. These things are a huge team effort by everybody. It's always sort of handed across to the director and I'm on the guy on the floor, certainly, but Donald, my producer, a huge contribution from him as with Greg, the writer, and the actors. So, unlike a lot of movies these things are very much a team effort, and in this case particularly so.

A Corps of New Videos as the Media Flood Continues

We are on the home stretch and the publicity for the Green Lantern film has reached a fever pitch.  There are so many new featurettes and interviews playing on the Internet and on television that it's hard to keep them all straight.  Here are some of the highlights.

First off, Yahoo movies has a new featurette that includes comments from the cast and crew as well as Geoff Johns talking all about the scale and scope of the Green Lantern universe.

The Story -
Krona's attempt to turn Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner into his new Guardians is thrown a curve when the destruction of Mogo in Green Lantern Corps #60 results in a psychic backlash that knocks the renegade Guardian and his army for a loop, rendering them temporarily disabled.  The two humans come to the conclusion that something horrible has happened as they realize that the raining rocks are all that remains of their dead comrade.

Clancy Brown
The Daily Blam today posted exclusive news on the casting of Clancy Brown as the voice of Parallax.  Brown is familiar to genre film fans through his roles in Highlander and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.  He has quite a resume when it comes to voice acting having provided the voice for Lex Luthor in nearly every appearance of the character since the Justice League cartoon and he has been the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants' Mr. Krabs since 1999.
