I haven’t been reading the six issue Death of Hawkman miniseries, but after hearing about what happened in this month’s fifth issue I may have to pick it up.  The series, written by Marc Andreyko with art by Aaron Lopresti, teams Hawkman with Adam Strange as they get dragged into yet another war between Rann and Thanagar.  While the title certainly makes is sound like Hawkman is biting the big one, it’s the death of another Thanagarian which will have Green Lantern fans’ interest piqued.

In the fifth issue it certainly appears that Isamot Kol, a fan favorite member of the Green Lantern Corps, is killed at the hands of Despero during a confrontation.  The ring seeks out Rayn Kral, Katar Hol’s partner from the Thanagarian police force, as Isamot’s successor.  Where Isamot’s sector partner, Vath Sarn, is during the battle is unknown.

It’s quite odd to see Isamot dispatched on the pages of this series and without much fanfare given the stature he’s acquired since his first appearance in Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1 back in 2005.  His partnership with Sarn, a Rannian, featured prominently in the revival of the Green Lantern franchise and he became quite popular, even getting a makeover and inclusion in the 2011 Green Lantern feature film and an action figure.  He was just seen in the pages of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps issue thirteen so it remains to be seen if his death remains in continuity, but writer Robert Venditti commented on social media that this looked pretty conclusive to him.

Update: In the serie’s final issue it’s revealed that Isamot Kol survived Despero’s attack but that he will be out of action while his healing abilities restore him.  In the interim Rayn Kral will be filling in for Isamot Kol.  Whew!
