With the fairly recent shakeup at DC Entertainment things have gone quiet on developments with the Green Lantern Corps movie, originally slated for release in 2020.  The only real news so far is that the original script by David Goyer and Justin Rhodes is no longer in the mix, with Geoff Johns taking over the writing duties for the film.  With that change, every rumor and inside scoop that we had before can be thrown right out the window.

Johns recently spoke with IGN about his various projects as part of their San Diego Comic-con coverage and the topic of Green Lantern Corps came up.  Johns revealed very little in the interview, but did mention that his script will pull heavily from his iconic run on the Green Lantern series and that the new film will in essence reboot Green Lantern as far as a cinematic universe is concerned.  Whether Johns is going to adapt his “Secret Origin” arc or not remains to be seen, but I think that audiences have outgrown the notion of the traditional superhero origin film.  Given that the film is still in the script development stage I’d be surprised if we’re still looking at a 2020 release date, although I’d be happy to be wrong about that.

“It’s a complete re-imagining, just like I did Green Lantern: Rebirth in the comics….I’m going to be hopefully delivering a script that Warner loves and DC likes and they want to make it. It’s going to celebrate the mythology and reinvent it in a different way.” – Geoff Johns
