It’s that time of year again and as has become tradition on The Blog of Oa we’ve once again risked life and limb by sneaking into Larfleeze’s lair to see what’s on the top of his mile long gift list this year. So whether you’re looking for something special to give to the Green Lantern fan in your life or you just want to print this out and leave it nestled between the pages of your loved ones’ most recent issue of Look magazine you’ve come to the right place. We also promote the idea of buying from your local comic shop, but if you don’t have one nearby we’ve included links to places where you can find these items online. Using the links provided will also in some cases provide a little bit of financial reward for us which helps defray the costs of the website and podcast.
Also – a reminder that there’s a great motion comic of the Larfleeze Christmas Special that can be watched to get you in the holiday spirit which you can watch here!
Comics
Hey we all love Green Lantern and the comic are likely what brought you to the universe we love so dear. There are some great collections out there to be sure and we’ve picked a few that we think is deserving of a little extra spotlight and recommend as a part of your reading library.
2019 marks the ten year anniversary of Blackest Night, the DC comics crossover event that ruled comic shops in the summer of 2009. Blackest Night is in our opinion the greatest Green Lantern centric event ever and the best DC crossover event since Crisis on Infinite Earths. For many this event represents the pinnacle of the Geoff Johns era of Green Lantern and like the Black Lanterns this series doesn’t stay dead on the DC Comics reprint list. To commemorate the event DC has released the Blackest Night Omnibus 10th Anniversary Edition. At a whopping 1664 pages this nearly 9 pound collection sells at an MSRP of $150, but Amazon has it available for $78 and if you have prime you save a lot on shipping! This past summer there was an epic podcast crossover event which covered the event in great detail. Here’s a link to the event listing all the episodes that adds a bit to the reading experience.
Hot off the presses this month is a 15th anniversary Absolute Edition of the late Darwyn Cooke’s amazing DC: The New Frontier series. The Absolute format is an oversized high quality edition that is quite frankly my favorite way to enjoy some of best work that DC has published. Included in this collection are over 50 pages of Cooke’s designs, sketches and preliminary artwork that made this something special. Amazon’s listing once again has a great price of $69.99 which is $30 less than MSRP.
We recently published information that DC is apparently releasing Green Lantern: Earth One Volume 2 next year. If you missed out on this Eisner Award nominated book now’s a good time as any to experience this new take on Green Lantern’s origins. Written and drawn by the husband and wife team of Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko, Green Lantern: Earth One Volume 1 is different than anything Green Lantern fans have read before.
Collectibles
Comic fans love collectibles and there’s no shortage of Green Lantern items for the fan in your life. Here’s just a few –
Eaglemoss has done a great job with there small comics figurines, but they have a larger line that many fans are unaware of that releases this month. This hand painted 12″ special edition figure is limited to 1000 pieces and is made out of a metallic resin and sells for $145 at Entertainment Earth. Entertainment Earth also has a Green Lantern watch from Eaglemoss that comes in a collectors tin for $35.
What kind of a Green Lantern fan doesn’t have a power battery? A sad one, that’s what kind. These used to sell for hundreds of dollars but these days you can find them for under $200. Amazon has the full size official one from DC Collectibles for $151.65 and it’s worth every penny. It stands 11.5″ high and includes a power ring that switches the lantern on when it gets close to it.
My son bought me this one many years ago for me to put on my car and I love it. It’s a chrome metal emblem that is 3¼ inches diameter with peel & stick adhesive. While I have it on my car it could be put on any flat surface like a computer, door or mailbox. The adhesive does hold up but I will caution that the color does fade if exposed to the sun for many years. Amazon has it for $19.95.
We didn’t get too far down Larfleeze’s list before he showed and then I barely escaped with my life, but hopefully this short list will give you some ideas for this year’s holiday season!
