After a few years Lanterns has emerged from development, with HBO officially announcing that the show has been picked up for an initial 8 episode season. The show will be the first live action series of the new James Gunn led DC Studios initiative.

According to Variety, Lanterns will be considered an HBO Original. The official logline for the show indicates that John Stewart will be a new Green Lantern recruit in the show, working side by side with Hal Jordan, termed a “Lantern legend”. Based on past information we know that Nathan Fillion will appear as Guy Gardner in a few of the 8 episodes as well. James Gunn and Peter Safran commented that, “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.”

Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country,” “Ozark”)  will serve as the showrunner and exec producer for Lanterns. Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and  comics writer Tom King will serve as executive producers as well as co-write Lanterns with Chris Mundy.
