After reports citing Kyle Chandler as being in talks to play Hal Jordan in the HBO Lanterns series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Chandler has indeed been cast in the role for the series. Josh Brolin had been offered the role, and rumors circled that names like Ewan McGregor, Chris Pine, and others were next on the list of potential candidates. Chandler has starred in series such as Friday Night Lights and has won an emmy; he also co-starred in the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Chandler is currently 59 years old and filming begins next year. Insiders are saying that the contract does not include any film work and is only for one season.  Any hope of a sensical approach to Green Lantern is out to the window at this point.

  1. Arg, terrible news. Sounds like they’re going in the old mentor direction. Won’t be surprised if they ultimately make him the bad guy in a “twist” that fools no one.

  2. Awesome news!- really great actor. I hadn’t heard Kyle Chandler as one of the rumored candidates, so this is a nice surprise. The only one I would have been equally excited for was Ewan McGregor.

  3. Agreed with @Peter on this one. It’s a bittersweet casting. I’m sure the guy is fine, but this points to no real long-term Hal plans and for John to be the main GL moving forward in the DCU.
If Hal doesn’t die off by the end of the series, maybe the best as we can hope for is a Hank Pym/Michael Douglas role for the DCU Chapters. But that’s a weird role for Hal Jordan to fill.
Sad that we’ll never get a Hal in his prime done properly at this rate.
I hope at least they’ll forget about John as a tough as nails marine and just play him as a socially aware architect – he had the semblance of an actual personality and not a clichéd stereotype in the military playing of him.
