James Gunn and HBO revealed that a teaser trailer for Lanterns would debuting on 3/5/26, however the footage leaked early forcing the studio to put out the official release early. The two minute twenty-one second trailer expands on the brief amount of footage that was included in an HBO Max sizzle reel, showing Hal Jordan and John Stewart in a car as Hal jumps out of the moving vehicle, leaving John to figure out how he saves himself as the car plummets over a cliff. The trailer focuses greatly on the dynamic between the two characters, being portrayed by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, highlighting some tension between them. A great deal of fan response has of course been generated, with general discourse over the Green Lantern uniform briefly shown hanging in a closet, the f-bombs dropped by Chandler, and the less than Green Lantern-ness of it all. Here’s the trailer if you have found it yourself yet.
“Less than Green Lanterness of it all” did we expect anything different from a series written by Tom King? His clearly shows he does not get superheroes though his cynical approach to DC characters.
I’ll reserve judgement. I’m a major Hal fan, having scored a copy of Showcase #22 for a buck with my dad back in the early 70s, then assembling an almost-complete set of GL from the 60s through the Morrison run.
There have been highs and there have been lows, and there have been stories that aged better or worse than others.
I’m getting a GL (vol.2) #50-75 vibe from this teaser, “wandering Hal” relying less on his ring and an unexpected creepy feel to the stories.
Am I POed that Hal is likely going to buy the farm in this series? Absolutely. Like the Blog folks said (of someone else?) at least Steve Rogers Captain America got 3 good solo movies to star in before he passed the torch to someone else.
With Hal we get the Reynolds one, then just as we have a shot at someone who knows what they’re doing with GL we say goodbye to Hal. I just hope Chandler has fun with it and the story is good.
I’m not buying the Marine John Stewart yet again, but the cartoon version of JS infected the socially-aware architect comic JS a long time ago. Sad because it just makes JS more boring and stereotypical.
The series is by Lindelof (excellent), Mundy (good, if we ignore the finale of Ozark) and Tom King (not a fan). So if Lindelof and Mundy take the lead here as it sounds like they’re doing, we have a shot at a pretty cool series.
