Animated Series Episode 4 "Into the Abyss" Review

With each new episode of Green Lantern: The Animated Series I find myself truly reconnecting with my inner child, and I wholly mean that in the best possible way.  As I sit and watch each episode I catch myself smiling a lot, not just from the humor that the writer's have put in each episode but because the team behind this show has really captured the elements of the Green Lantern mythology that made me latch onto it in first place.  From the goals and mission of the Corps to the imagination stirring science fiction concepts to the characterization of Hal Jordan, a man who will go to any length to do the right thing no matter what.  And that leaves me feeling so positive about the notion that out there somewhere kids are getting exposed to this and feeling the same thing and hopefully illustrating some important life lessons along the way.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights Blu-ray Review

The latest DC Universe animated film, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, was officially released yesterday in both digital and optical disk formats, the second animated film featuring Green Lantern.  While not linked to Green Lantern: First Flight in terms of continuity, the fact that the creators choose to take a shortcut and use the same character design could certainly add a bit of confusion if you began watching this feature thinking you were getting a sequel.  Like Batman: Gotham Knights, Emerald Knights is an anthology of five animated sequences held together by an over arcing story, however where the Batman anthology seemed a little disjointed by an unclear narrative and diverse art styles Bruce Timm and friends have done a better job to put together a film that serves as a primer for anyone new to the Green Lantern universe that remains satisfying to long time fans.

This review covers the Blu-ray edition of the movie, so some elements such as special features may not apply depending on the version you purchase.

New Emerald Knights Video Clip and Nathan Fillion Interview

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has released a new clip from Green Lantern: Emerald Knights along with some short interview clips with Nathan Fillion who provides the voice for Hal Jordan.  I edited the clips together to make it easier to watch.

New Green Lantern Video Interview with Alan Burnett and Bruce Timm

Comic Book Resources has a great video interview with Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, two of the creators behind the DC Universe animated direct to video features.  This particular interview, shot during WonderCon,  focuses heavily on Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, which releases officially on June 7th.  The interview touches on the emphasis on Hal Jordan as the main Green Lantern, the choices for the stories in this new anthology, as well as the upcoming Justice League: Doom animated feature and the tragic loss of Dwayne McDuffie.

Nathan Fillion Talks Emerald Knights Plus a New Clip Emerges

Warner Brothers Home Video has provided another interview conducted by the studio with one of the voice actors from the upcoming Green Lantern: Emerald Knights direct to video feature that releases on June 7th.  This time around it is with the voice of Hal Jordan, Nathan Fillion.  Accompanying the interview is a new clip from the animated film.

Here is the studeo conducted interview in its entirety:

Castle, Firefly Star Nathan Fillion Leads Voice Cast as Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: Emerald Knights
Entertainment Weekly’s “Geek God” returns to the animated superhero realm in All-New DC Universe Animated Original Movie Coming June 7 to Blu-Ray™, DVD

Entertainment Weekly dubbed him a “Geek God.” TV Guide seems to document his every move. Firefly/Serenity fans follow him in any direction he goes.

And all the while, Nathan Fillion contines to go his own way, his boyish charm and “ruggedly handsome” exterior constantly reflecting the enchanting attitude of the proverbial kid-in-a-candy-store.

Make no mistake, Nathan Fillion is having the time of his life.

Fillion’s primetime series Castle is enjoying its best ratings, cracking Nielsen’s Top 10 as the popular ABC drama culminated its third season. And despite the five-plus-days-a-week grind of 14-plus hours on set, Fillion still finds time to fulfill his own guilty geek pleasures.

Elisabeth Moss Talks About Arisia in Latest Emerald Knights Interview

Warner Brothers Home Video has released a studio conducted interview with actress Elisabeth Moss, familiar to many from her hit AMC television show Mad Men, about her experience voicing Arisia for the upcoming DC Universe direct to video feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.  The studio also provided two short video segments to go with the following interview.

Question: What’s the essence of Arisia’s story in Green Lantern: Emerald Knights?

Elisabeth Moss: It’s sort of Arisia’s first day on the job, so there’s a huge learning curve for her. She’s just been basically plucked out of class on her home planet and thrown into this intergalactic police force – just as the universe is under attack. So it’s all very overwhelming for her. But she’s smart and courageous, so she rises to the occasion.
Question: You get years to develop your character on shows like Mad Men and The West Wing. Was it difficult to have just one day in Arisia’s shoes?

Elisabeth Moss: Well, I really love Arisia’s boots – they’re very cool, I like their style – so I like being in her shoes (she laughs). Animation is great because you’re part of a large team effort. I’m only required to provide my voice for a single character, and to act that role while the director and writers and animators create the entire story. So it’s fun to see that all come together, especially to see an animated sort-of version of yourself.

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper Unleashes Bolphunga in Emerald Knights

Professional wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper brings his brand of energy to the June 7th release of Green Lantern: Emerald Knights by providing the voice for Bolphunga the Unrelenting, the blusterous and rowdy in his own right warrior who serves to explain to the audience exactly why "Mogo doesn't socialize".  Taken from the fan favorite Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' crafted backup Green Lantern Corps tale in the back of 1985's Green Lantern issue #188, the story features Bolphunga searching the planet looking to defeat the acclaimed Mogo.  Bolphunga searches in vain to discover Mogo's whereabouts and it is only in the exhaustion and frustration of not being able to find him that the warrior comes to the humbling realization that Mogo is much more than your typical adversary.

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper voices Bolphunga the Unrelenting
Emerald Knights is Piper's first role in an animated film, not counting playing himself in a Robot Chicken episode.  The World's Finest has a Warner Brothers provided interview online with the "Hot Rod", who has always been one of my favorite wrestlers.  Besides his legacy of his wrestling career Piper is famous for the "I'm here to chew bubble gum and kick ass....and I'm all out of bubble gum!" ad lib line and the fight scene with Keith David in John Carpenter's They Live film from 1988.

Piper found the voiceover work to be freeing for him and shares in the interview what he's doing now as well as comparing his acting career to his life in the ring....and of course takes a potshot at Hulk Hogan!  The entire interview is available over at the World's Finest website.

"That was about as much fun as I could ever hope to have. You can really lose yourself in an animated role. There’s so much freedom, so much room for creativity. It’s a blast." -- Roddy Piper

Warner Brothers has been offering a lot of images from the upcoming Green Lantern: Emerald Knights direct to video feature on both their Facebook page and the movie's official website.  The film definitely is taking many artistic cues from Green Lantern: First Flight despite not being linked to it in terms of continuity.  Here is a compilation of what the studio has released so far including several brand new images.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights Premieres at WonderCon

The second Green Lantern direct to video feature, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, debuted to a packed ballroom at WonderCon this past weekend, followed by a panel featuring Geoff Johns, Bruce Timm, Andrea Romano and others.   Before the panel began Nathan Fillion, the voice of Hal Jordan in the feature, called in to the show to participate since he could not attend in person due to the filming schedule for this television series "Castle".  Fillion, never one to disappoint the fans, got a rouse from the crowd by injecting his great sense of humor into the Green Lantern oath.  "In brightest day, in blackest night," he started before quipping, "I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight."

The panel also announced the next two projects on their slate, one being an adaptation of "Batman: Year One" and the other being the late Dwayne McDuffie's last work, "Justice League: Doom" which is loosely based on Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel" story arc from the Justice League.  Nathan Fillion hinted that he may voice Hal Jordan again when asked who his favorite Green Lantern character is besides Hal.
